i went to about the reef today i wanted to get a black volitan lionfish my mom was with me and wanted to buy a clown and royal gramma for my tank. I thought they were to small and would get eaten by the lion so i asked the guy working there if the lion fish would eat these fish since there small he said i would have no problems and they would get along. so i get home put the gramma in first and i think he died in the rock work. so i was just looking at the tank and i saw the lion preying on the clown then all the sudden hes having a 19 dollar dinner in front of me. I want to know what to do since they have a fish return policy. the reason i got a sw tank is to get a lion but i have other clowns and chromis and damsels in the tank do u think i should return the lion since he probley ate both of my new fish and there alot of other small fish to snack on.

He said what?!
Return policy or not, they should cover that since it was their bad advice that lead to the purchase.
It is also a lesson for you not to trust them and do research before you even make a purchase.

Best advice I can give you: GO TO REEF CULTURE FROM NOW ON! :)

Lion fish eat whatever fits into their mouth and they have big mouths! Let us know if they actually return your money, I'm curious to find out.

well i want to get replacements for the gramma and clown then get store credit cause the other fish i have gotten from that store are doing great

yeah im pretty sure he ate both fish he looks fat and i wont take advice from them again cause anothe time i was there there he offered to sell me two sting rays for 200 and that they would be reefsafe

This shows you that ATR is clearly in it only to make a quick buck and I guess they don't want return customers. I would never go there anyways. Always do your own research and read up about each animal your interested in prior to impulse purchasing. Whether that be this website or anything else. There are so many people on this site that you could ask these question's to and get a real perspective. There is a ton of info on the web as well. Lastly, I would definately return that Lion pronto and stick with a reef since all your other fish seem to be in that sprectrum. You'll need a large predator specifc tank if you want a lion, not a reef tank.

Yeah I'm returning it tommorrow I can see the clown fish in it's belly but I'm going to get a blue hippo tang and replacments for the clown and gramma the lion ate then I'll start going to a different store like aqua touch

I do not agree with needing a predator tank for a lion. We have two volitans in our reef tank and have had no problems. Lions do not harm corals but will eat anything they can fit in their mouths so tank mates need to be choosen accordingly. Our large system has 2 lions, 4 tangs, a pair of crosshatches, rabbitfish, and an eel. The reason people do not like them in a reef is because they have problems controlling there nutrients. We do not keep any SPS but do have a bunch of LPS and all of them are thriving along with a few softies.

Well on the plus side atleast the lion is eating! But like said above, they will eventually eat anything that can fit in their mouths. I think they are fine for a big reef tank though. Again like said above you'd just have to pick the other fish accordingly and start with the smallest lion possible and put it in last

One good thing about the store is the other fish I got from there were all heathly and the tAng I got from there ate the same day I put it in the tank

I had a good time looking around that store last weekend, put honestly didnt trust the info he gave me when i was there, went home and did some research and it was contradictory to what he said. Dont know who is right him or google :) But looking at the overall cleanliness of ATR as compared to the two other stores i like, especially since there were like 3 people working there, it came in 3rd. Dont think i'll be going there so much.

Let me restate my thought because I think it got lost in transalation. When I said that a Lion would not do well in a reef tank I am implying that a large majority of reef inhabitants that we keep in the aquarium setting are on the smaller side. This being said, Yes, Volitans are collected in the Indo-Pacific region along reefs but would not do well in most normal size settings with smaller tank mates. The tank you're describing seems to have mostly large predatory fish along with large tangs that won't be eaten. Corals won't be bothered by any of them but most choose to seperate the bigger guys (predators) from a largely dominated (smaller fish) reef tank. Tangs are the large exception to big fish that may not bother smaller tankmates.

well i went back there today to return the lion they were nice about it and gave me replacments for the fish that got eaten then i got store credit to get some other fish and my tank has 1 butterfly 1 tang 1 rabbitfish 2 osclares clowns 1 chromis 2 damsels 1 anthia and 1 goby. They all get along except for the cleaner shrimp that attacks my tang and the good thing about that store is i havent had one fish die from there except for the lion incident.

Well, I'm very glad to hear that. Even though they took care of it for you, it still isn't enough to convince me to to go back there anytime soon.
