conch roaming

sticky polyps

I just got a conch today and he seems very happy. cruising the sand bed for a few hours and burrowed a little. then he starts to climb the rockwork. I would prefer it if he just stuck to the sand bed but I obviously know I cant control where he wants to go. I have many coral that are not completely attached to the rock and I am worried that I will have almost every one of them fall down every morning when I look at the tank. he has only climbed up a short way and parked but once again he is under a green cap and I know he would be strong enough to either break or dislodge it if he decides to go to close. is it normal for them to climb up? im hoping he learns it is easier to stay on the sand bed. any thoughts??

What kind of conch?
What size tank?
Water parameters?
Tankmates?
How old is the tank?
How deep is the substrate?

I believe it is a fighting conch
65gal
all great
coral, fish, small hermits, a few margarita snails, a couple nassarius snails
4 mo.
varies between 1.5 and 3.5 inches

my question is do they usually go up on the live rock a lot normally or not?
thanks for the replies!

Mine have never climbed the rock in my tanks that I have seen. They strictly stayed either in or on top of the sand, again that I have seen and I have kept them for many years in every tank I have owned.

I recently got one and found it at the top, above my foam wall out of the water... They will climb glass occasionally, but usually not walls. For the most part they either roam the sand or stay buried.

Ignore my previous post.. Was thinking of my nassarius snail for some reason. Anyways, had a conch once, until my horse conch killed it, and it stayed on the substrate 90% of the time or on rock formations that it could hop onto.

Hard to control a wild animal it is.. knocks every damn coral off your rock wall that is not secure, it will....

if i were you.. i would buy glue...

Your tank is new and the conch may not be getting enough to eat. You may want to feed it directly for a while.
