Conch vs. Clam

I found one of my conchs (1 of 2)on top of my small Crocea clam. The clam was fine last night but now looks as though is was eaten by the Conch and now dead.
I'm not sure what type of Conchs I have but never read anything regarding the predator habits towards clams.
Did I miss something?

The clam was fine last night. The clam has been in the tank for about 6 months and conch been in for about 3 months.
I just never heard of this hapening and I guess by the number of replies no one has either.

I'm not familiar with conches around clams, but from what you describe, I'd be willing to bet there was something wrong with your clam- they can show few signs of ill health before succumbing rapidly.

Same comment as Kfisc, many times they will not show ANY signs of health problems until they actually die. Specially if they don't have enough light.

are you sure you dont have a cone snail? manny people confuse these when they are small .

conch do eat clams i put one in my tank and it ate it the same night i know this because i caught him but it was 2 late.

Interesting, i have a conch in my tank and a ton of clams, the conch never bothers any of the clams and most of them are on the sand bed.

Thanks everyone!
I have never seen this problem either and I also caught the conch on top of my clam munching away.
I have two other clams and so far they are OK.
I guess I'll keep an eye out and see what happens.
Thanks again...

yeah, how much light do you have? i have three clams and a conch for almost a year now, no problems thus far.

I have an Aqua Spacelight - 2-250w MH 10K with 2 PC Atinincs.
I have 2 other crocea clams in the tank, 1 about 1.5 years in the tank, the other about a month.
I was just worried that the conch may go after them.

I guess that's enough lights... just watch the conch, if it bothers, maybe its time to remove it. it is labeled "with caution," so it may really go after the clam. goodluck!

what kind of conch?

it cant be a queen conch. they are herbivores.
the other kind of conch maybe... the fighting conch is omnivorous

I've read that Queen Conch would go after clams more than Fighting Conch but like they said above, you generally won't know about the death or probable death of a clam until it happens, probably was just scavaging for food. Check your tank, water params, this may be a sign of something wrong with your system..

I had a conch kill my 5" crocea. The clam was doing great and I found the conch on top of it.I thouhgt the conch just happened to crawl on top of it,I removed it and the clam opened fully shortly after.I went to work, came home, the conch was on the clam again! The clam necer opened again.

Thats how mine happened except the conch was finishing the job an hour later. the next day teh clam shell was as clean as you could get it!
