Condy Anemone

I'm currently running a 50/50, actinic, and a regular daylight bulb in a triple tube fluorescent in a 55 gallon FOWLR.

I'd like to put a condy or 2 in the tank and have been told that special light isn't required for them to flourish. Is that true or will I need T-5's or MH?

You don't mention your watts. Are these pc's or NO bulbs? Condy's aren't as demanding as some anemones, but still require strong lighting. If you have pc's, you will be okay in a 55 gallon assuming you have enough watts and you would be better off to have all the bulbs in the daylight range. If you have NO (normal output) then the anemone would have to be in the very top 6 or 8 inches, and it still wouldn't be a great idea.

Hi underdasea,

[welcome]

I can't tell if you're using NO fluorescents (T8 or T12), or PCs. At first I pictured three 48" bulbs, but when you said you're running a 50/50 it made me think you must be using PCs, since they're the only 'dual' bulbs out there...

If you're using three 48" T8 or T12 bulbs, you don't have enough light for an anemone IMO. If you've got 3 36" PCs (96W bulbs), and changed it to 1 x 50/50, 2 x 10K or 12K (daylight), a condy would probably be fine. If you have 3 24" PCs (55W or 65W), even if two or all three are daylights, I think that's pushing it.

Condys aren't terribly demanding AFAIK, but they still need a fair amount of light. Additionally, they're known to sometimes consume fish (especially perching fish, like clown gobies and hawks, or clowns that try to adopt them as a host).

Let us know a bit more about the tank, inhabitants and lighting and hopefully we can help out more :)

Some people think that condy are not as expensive as other anemones. However, they require a good amount of PAR, close to that of other anemones.

I think hobbysalty's point was that even though they're cheap, they still need quite a bit of light -- correct me if I'm wrong, hobbysalty :)
