Considering Dumping Filters

I have a 75gal reef tank with a little more than 100 pounds of live rock and 45 pounds of sand. This tank has been set up for over 5 years. It contains some LPS, a couple of soft corals, and a growing collection SPS corals. For circulation I am using 5 Koralia pumps. There is a sterilizer in the system. For filtration I am using a Fluval 404, an Emperor 400, and a hang-on-style refugium with a protein skimmer.

I am thinking about removing the Emperor and the hang on refugium and depend on the circulation, live rock and sand, along with the Fluval. Any thoughts or recommendations?

I would recommend to remove the fluval (that thing is useless IMO, too much bypass) and the emperor because flow (your koralia's), rock and sand, and a skimmer is good enough with the added benefit of the refugium. Good luck Wiz

+1 and you probably dont need the strerilizer either. fuge skimmer live rock good flow regular water changes.

I would keep the fuge definetly, or even replace the 2 filters and the hang on fuge and get a bigger 1. I personaly like UV steilizers so I wouldn't lose that either. 1 time I started noticing I had been having to clean my glass a lot more frequently. So I went around checking all my equipment, and sure enough my UV bulb had blown. As soon as I fixed it, it was back to normal. So it made a believer out of me.

I like using a canister filter of some sort. I use it for another means of mechanical filtration and run carbon in it.

I would just recommend a sump if that is possible. you could then run reactors that efficiently use the carbon and put all that in there.

Also, if you really want to use a canister i would recommend the magnum 350, so simple and works!

Filters are too much of hassle, I remove my oceanclear as the recirculation just amp up my nitrates. Get yourself a good protein skimmer, and my water is looking better without the filter now.

Sorry, slight off topic, but your using 5 Koralias in a 75. Which models do you have in there?

I'd like to know your setup of 5 koralias in a 75g also!

I run my Fluval 405 on my 75 gallon with only chemi-pure/carbon in it - no sponges or anything else. Don't care about bypass because only carbon is in it. Works very well for me. I also have about 100lbs of live rock, 100lbs of live sand, an octopus BH300f that skims fantastic and an Aquafuge2 with chaeto and more live rock in it. so far so good.

I have 4 Koralia 1 and 1 nano. The Koralia 1s are connected to a redsea wave maker and work very well. the nano runs on a timer during the photoperiod. Theyare directed at the sides and front of the tank--two top, two bottom and one in the top middle directed at the front glass.

I wouldnt take them off all at once. I would do one per week just in case.

I agree. I started last night after reading several of the posts. My first disconnect: the Emperor 400. I will wait a few days to see how the tank responds.

Yea bro, I dont run any mechanical filtration at all, I just blow off the rocks every week or so...
