Construction in my apartment...

Just want to get a feel for what you guys would do in my situation...

I am going away for spring break (9 days) and was just planning to leave my tank as is for 9 days with RO/DI dripping for top off and the fish can eat the pods, etc.

i come to find out today that the school will be doing construction in my bathroom over the break. i have no control over this so dont say something like "dont let them"

on top of this horrible situation they will be changing my locks so i wont even be able to hire someone to stop in an check on the tank - not to mention giving my keys away is against the rules so im screwed there...

the best i can think of is to ask my boss to stop in once every day or so to make sure that the fish are still swimming...

they told me that they would seal off the tank area, but i think i am going to tell them not to do that because i dont want the gas exchange to be too low and have CO2 build up or have the sealed area get too hot... i think ill recommend that they just seal off the bathroom REALLY REALLY well to prevent concrete dust, etc from being in the air around the tank...

im also going to put up signs in english and in spanish warning people to not touch the tank or the water in the tank... ill put some very scary warnings about the zoas having paly toxin and how that can put them in the hospital if they dont know what they are doing (not untrue, but unlikely...)

what do you guys think? im meeting with the big boss tomorrow to let him know what i want to do, so the sooner i get some tips the better...

let them seal up the tank and if you have a small air compressor let that run to create a pressurized chamber inside the sealed area. kinda what they reccomend doing for houses that are being tented.

Does anyone else there keep a tank? I'd tell them that I am not comfortable with workmen in your room while you are out of town. Change the locks B4 they get there. Have a friend get a key anyway. Bribe someone there to take care of it. What if they break the tank while your gone. 10000 reasons this is a bad scenario. Too long to be away with out someone watching things.

They let you keep a tank in the dorm?

yea they let me keep a tank... up to 10 gallons ... oops lol... im the RA so i enforce the rules and i say its okay to have my system...

i cant change any of the locks... and telling them no isnt an option as i said above...

nobody here keeps a tank... closest thing is that Sean (volunterguy) works in the next building over.. ive already PMd him to see if he can stop by once a day during the week...

collect water in a garbage can and drip it from there

?! what do you mean by this...

How big is your tank and how much top off do you need a day. If you need 1 gallon a day then you need a trash can that can hold 9 gallons (9 days right). Well I would put like double in just to be safe. All you need is a float valve and a pump.

you dont want to draw too much attention to your oversized tank. especialy if you claim to have toxic animals inside. you may end up being asked to take it down.

dont get overstressed, show your boss what to do, and go out on break, no big deal. the english / spanish signes are a good idea, but remermber to seem friendly. if the workers feel they can enjoy your tank they will likely go out of thier way to protect it.

and dont tell people you have toxic animals

did i mention not saying you have toxic animals

good luck

I agree with Kogo. It would be better to politely describe the fragile nature of the livestock in the tank, and ask them to be cautious around it. It would be better than causing undue concern which could spawn problems later on.

So many variables in both directions :/

When I brought my 24g tank (20g dorm limit :p) to my FSU dorm, I just broke it down and hauled it off to the LFS, who I had gotten friendly with the owner, since it was a small mom-and-pop shop, and he kept it for me for the 2 weeks or w/e that break was.

Sure, it was a royal PITA breaking it down and putting it back up again, but I knew that it was safe and in good hands. And when I got back, there were new free corals in it to boot :p

However you do it Matt, good luck!

P.S. If you're dosing RO and someone is coming by to feed once a day or check it, maybe teach them to check salinity with a swing arm or something just to make sure it's one less thing to go wrong....

Volunteerguy (sean) agreed to come in mon, wed, and fri... hes gonna feed, and refill the RO on wed for me...

now to just make sure they seal the construction area really well so there isnt dust flying all over the apartment...

still gonna leave a nice note inviting the workers to sit on my couch and watch the fish, but to please not touch because they are fragile.
