Cooling Systems

I would love to see or hear what people with high wattage lighting are using to keep their systems cool.

I have 2 400 W MH and 2 160W VHO. I just transfered my reef to a 125 so I have not completed the cooling system. Right now I am only using 2 4" fans and I'm running about 4 degrees higher than I would like. I know I need to add more fans but I would love to see what kind of fans you are using and how your placement is, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any help!

where tangers, he just did a fan upgrade on his 125 and he dropped quite a few degrees. maybe he will chime in.

I have a azoo quad fan set dirrected directly at the sump and my tank temp dropped 5 degrees, I also have 1 5" on each side of the stand and canopy.

Like thor said, I posted about 2 mos. ago with a heat issue. My tank was running about 78-79 at night and the day depended on a lot of things, but could get up to 84!!! We were always having to keep the house at 72 degrees, and in more than one way the whole situation was uncomfortable. I previously was running 4- 92mm fans. I swiched them out to 4 - 120 mm fans and what a difference. I now have everything hooked up to my ac jr and my tank stay at 77.8- 78.3 degrees at all times. My ac hasn't been on since saturday and it still stays at 78. and so far I have only had to use 2 fans. ( the second set doesn't kick on till 79 degrees but they have yet to kick on once!) the new fans are a little louder than I like so I do plan on going with a little lower cfm and lower db since these ones are performing almost too well. I would deff. switch to the 120mm fans though, twice the air movement! If you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask.

checkout the silverstone 120mm PC fans. i was very impressed when i first seen them and have a couple myself now. my reflectors run parallel in the canopy and i have a fan on each end blowing down the reflectors. pretty much the same set-up SITC has over their tanks, just mine is DIY.
tank stays preety good around 78-80. I think last night with the MH still on, it was 79.6.

Right now I am only running the 2 92mm fans. I didn't expect them to be enough but they are already somewhat load.

The tank is right at my front door so I would like to keep it as quite as possible. Any suggestions on brand or model of 120mm fans that would do the trick?

I haven't had a prob. with brands. I've bought all mine off ebay. usually look for ball bearing. I would say 4- 75 cfm should work. or at least some thing around that. Mine are 130 cfm with 48 db. (plenty loud) you'll just have to shop around and see what has the best cfm for the least db and find the best one in the middle.

hard to say. doesn't give the db ( i'm sure it isn't hight though) and 35 cfm isn't moving that much air. is your canopy enclose fully. If it is your going to want to do what I did and that's drill holes in the side and have the fans force air in, which pushes the hot air out. I'm not sure just hanging those on the back will work if you have a canopy.? I know people who have run similar setups to that under outer-orbit style fixtures and like them, not sure with a canopy though.

walmart had the clip on fans that you can clip on the back of your stand under neith the display

7 bucks a piece and they can even oscelate they brought my tank down 3 degrees.

after a year you can clean them or dump it or just buy a new at that price. i put mine on the same power strip as my halides so when my halides came on so did my fans

Here is something else I found. I think this is more along the lines of what you were suggesting.

My canopy is fully enclosed and is about 18 inches off the water. I wanted to keep all the hole and fans out of site if possible. I have vetalated the hood with 6 - 3 inch ports. With 2 92mm fans blowing across my MH. You think if I add 2 more 120mm fans blowing across the tank and one more 92 blowing up through one of the ports I would be ok?

Thanks mark, I actually did that one my sump and it works great but I need to lose another 4 to 6 degrees. Everybody in my tank seems happy even at 82-84 but I want it cooler. I expect to add more fans just trying to figure out the best fans and placement for my buck.

Thanks!

Those fans should do you well. Same concept as mine only my ac jr does the work that the variable speed in the fans does. They should only be a little loud if they are running full speed, but as the tank cools a little they quiet down. Should work good. I had holes for my 92mm fans and I drilled them out to 4 3/4" holes for my new fans. It has always been my understanding that you want to get as much air "in" the canopy as possible, rather than just blow it around.

This is the specs on some other fans that I found but they don't have the thermo control. What is an ac jr? Would I be better off with one of those and these fans or just buying that ebay setup?

Aqua controller jr. Main controller for everything in my tank, lights, fans, heaters, pumps, etc... those fans sound good but could be a little loud. like I said it is hard to tell until you get them and put them in, but mine are 48 db and too loud for me. those are 41 db, i would try to get something a little lower if you are concerned about noise. it's hard to tell though, each situation is different. you'll just have to weigh out noise/ air flow and see which one wins if you think flow is more important go with a higher cfm ( like those ones). if you are concerned about the noise try to find ones with as much cfm as possible but a little lower db.

Since you don't have a controller I think the variable ones you pointed out are prob a good bet, shouldn't be too loud and should still move some air. (and only speed up when needed)

Tangers, your ACjr is actually able to take advantage of multiple speed fans? Meaning, it can speed them up and slow them down accordingly?
