copepods

Since i started with mostly dead rock, and some live rock and all live sand I would assume I do not have a lot of copepods in my tank.
I know there are commercial products out there, would that be a good idea to add?
I hear they can help with all sorts of good things in the tank, even algea control. it this correct?

copepods are always beneficial to any reef tank bc they are an additional food source to fish and corals esp the Mandarian fish and scooters

i bought one small bottle from the fish store and they have been reproducing in my refugium ever since

as for algae control not really if u put some macro algae/caulp in ur refugium they help with algae control in ur main tank

coperpods use the algae as their home

I bought a bag of 200 from saltwaterfish dot com, "on sale" for $9.99, a few months ago (under Inverts->Shrimp). Just poured them in, and I see them all the time now. I hadn't planned on buying them...just needed another $10 to get free shipping...

If there is someone local that is giving away cheto that's an excellent want to introduce some new critters to your tank (amphipods,
copepods. , amphipods, mysid shrimp, isopods, etc ) given you have a refugium. That way will not only have a place to reproduce without predidation, but will constantly be introduced into your tank as a supplemental food source. I guess depending on experience buying the bottles of pods can go either way. I have tried two brands and both did not contain the number they specify on the bottle and IMO were a waste of money. I called both places and they are actually shipped with way less than advertised and they are supposed to multiply in the bottles. I ended up getting some cheto from a fellow reefer and introduced way more critters for free .
