copper in DT

so while i was on vacation my mom started to worry that my yellow tang got velvet. and she read online that copper supplement would clear it up. she put it in to my DT and not my QT. is there any way to get the copper out of my DT?

Rock and substrate can absorb copper, making accurate measuring of copper level impossible; THIS IS VITAL. Copper will kill all inverts, including coral and all algae (including desirable algae); possibly creating an ammonia problem. Copper can stay in the rock & substrate for who knows how long. It would be a long tome before I trusted an anemone, or any invert, in that tank. Using copper in a DT is a huge mistake and should never be done. IMO & IME: the chances of curing velvet and saving the fish using copper in a DT are next to zero. You say you're rebuilding after a massive loss; why in the world don't you use a QT?

+1 It's important to know that rock and substrate absorb copper, but can also precipitate it. Even running Cuprisorb on the tank, I would never trust that rock or sand again. A water test won't reveal how much copper leached into the rock, or when/how much it will release at any given time.

i the massive loss was caused by a power outage in my apartment. also i did not put the copper in the DT. i was planing on using my QT when i got back for vacation but it was to late my mom already put it in my DT :/ i will try couprisorb and running active carbon and a polly filer for a cupple months before i try and put anything in and when i do ill start with small things like a few snails and see how they do in the tank.

My fowlr has been dosed a couple of times with cupramine. After running polluter pad for a couple of months, I can keep snails, shrimps, ebay, hermits without any issues. Pods and other do still show up in the tank, except for any type of algae. Just continue to keep a polluter pad in you sump for a while.

Depends on the copper you use.

Cupramine - I remove it by doing a fat water change then run carbon/purigen for a few months.

Coppersafe - replace everything.

Copper safe is harder to get out of the tank? Due to the size and number of fish...... Next time I get a ich out brake (hopefully never) I will dose in display tank. I just don't have a qt setup large enough for 15-20 fish up to a foot long........

I hope it never happens.... But if it does I thought I would use copper safe due to being easier to dose and always used it in the past with great results.

Worse case...... Never be able to have a clean up crew again in my fowlr.

i used copper safe my velvet has cleared up and is gone. i started to treat my tank with cuprisurb today and in a matter of hours my ppm has droped .25 very impressed with this product i would recommend it to anyone with a copper problem. it does not cost much and can be renewed one it is unable to filter anymore copper out of the tank. i will be running it all the time now. because i tested my tap water for copper and right out of my sink it has .25ppm in it.

so in the end i used this hole thing as an excuse to buy a bigger tank lol set it up and not a singe trace of copper in the DT now :D
