Copper Treatment--30 Days From When

Curious George

Ok, so after 3 days in Copper, my Majestic Angel is looking great. WHAT A TURN AROUND. From a 100 (Estimate) white cysts of ich to none:bounce2: He's clean, but I have been keeping a journal and this morning I noticed a shake/shiver.

I noted it and wanted to know, does the 30 day copper treatment start from the last visible signs, as in visual white specks or does that included ANY symptoms like a shiver? Or does the 30 days start from the first day of actual treatment?

I want to make sure I don't cut this short before I remove the copper, but don't want to keep him in copper any longer than needed.

Thank you in advance

I dont have any experience with Majestic Angels, but have done cupramine treatments on 7 "large" angels over the last 5 months. Large angels normally handle copper pretty well.

If ich was visibly present, I would probably do 21 days of .4-.5ppm. then lighten it up to ~.3ppm for another 7 days.

If no ich seen, I like to do 14 days .4-.5ppm and another 7-14 days of .3ppm.

I do at minimum 2 treatments of prazi on all incoming angels too.

Also, keep an eye out for HLLE when dosing copper. My emperor juvie and blueface started to display it. My blueface got it pretty bad too and 3 months later still havent cleared.

Interesting because I had a 6bar angel that did the same thing. I've treated at least 5 angels with copper and he was the only one who got HLLE. He was about 6" when I got him which would make him the largest angel I'm medicated. I know he did have internal parasites, and I always suspected the copper caused it but others don't seem to have the same experience.

my majestic angel too had HLLE after being in copper for 3 weeks. After be placed in the DT and fed good food, the HLLE disappeared in about 2 weeks.

30 days of copper is too long and unnecessary. most people do 21 days with success. after 21 days, remove copper and observe for 4 weeks. if there are no signs of ich during those 4 weeks then you may put the fish into DT.

IME(emperor/chrysurus/blueface) pomacanthus angels are real bad about HLLE with copper treatment. Just do 21 days and observe for another ~2 weeks. make sure your copper level is consistently within therapeutic range.

1.)PraziPro shouldn't be used when copper is present, according to its mfg---it great reduces the effectiveness of the PP.

2.) Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean the ich is gone. the copper did not clear up the fish, reading Snorvich's post will make that clear. It won't kill the ich on the fish or the cysts (white spots). This is probably the common ''calm before the storm"; but the copper will prevent the new generation from reaching the fish.

3.) Watch this fish very closely and have carbon or Cuprisorb to remove copper quickly if he develops a reaction. As others have said, Angels are copper- sensitive; but (IMO & IME) can be completely treated with some patience and flexibility. I know there a lot of good opinions that differ, but because of the seemingly ever-expanding life cycle of ich---I'd treat for at least 30 days, assuming he's well-monitored ( IMO & IME) THE key to copper & Angels doing well. There is just too large a percentage of cysts that can last longer than 21 days to make me comfortable....but I respect all opinions on this.

4.) The relationship of copper and HLLE is very recent info---to me anyway. I've never seen it or read anything that says the two are related---except on this forum. But, these are excellent hobbyists and it could be true, at least the HLLE seems to be temporary.
