Coral Banded Shrimp

My wife picked up a CBS at a sale sat. Pretty cool little guy but seeing as he is equipped with some large pincers I am a little concerned about him getting along. I also have a cleaner shrimp, 2-pep shrimp, a crab (looks like emerald but its red) and a dozen each blue hermits and assorted snails. Along with some damsels, 2- clowns, some kind of blemmy. Should I be concerned about the CBS or maybe even move him to the sump?

CBS is a gamble. Some are harmless for awhile and others are born to kill. I wouldn't trust a CBS around fish smaller or similar sized, other shrimp, arrow crabs (they fight all the time for some reason..) etc. etc. Sometimes they can be everybody's favorite, harmless reef inhabitant in a reef tank, while on many occasions be as dangerous as mantis shrimp in the DT (display tank)

I got pinched a few times when I had mine. Definitly worth having in a fuge or something, very very interesting and amazing creatures, just not around some of the livestock in the DT IMHO.

FYI, you got a red mithrax crab, pretty much the same thing as an emerald mithrax crab but just red

Found the peppermint shrimp dead this morn. Now I have to catch the killer and move him before he kills a $30 cleaner shrimp or anything else. Im thinking maybe a piece of food in the net and wait for him to come out. I have big rock towers and arch in the tank. Looks good but it makes it impossible to catch critters.

Are you sure the carcass you found this morning wasn't a molt? If the CBS did kill the peppermint shrimp and there was any "meat" left, it would probably have had an unpleasant odor to it. You might want to keep your eyes peeled for that peppermint shrimp in the days to come.

FWIW, I had two cleaners, a fire, & a CBS in a 60 gallon tank for a long time without any problems. They each had there own hiding spots and were all well fed. This might have helped with the aggression between the shrimp.

Coral banded shrimp will kill any other type of shrimp, even other cbs if they don't get along. I had a pair of them and the female had issues molting and ended up dying, bought several new females one at a time to find him a new mate. If he didn't like her attitude she was dismembered then killed. Never had one go after a fish in my tank though. Get that one out of your tank if you want to keep your other shrimp.

Had bought 2 accident...got along killing everything else but larger fish....turned on each other......by the time i figured it out, gave him away. You should be able to get him into a net by coaxing it out with some small cube of shrimp on a skewer end ....put it on good and up from the tip. Should do the job easily
