Coral Beauty & Flame Angel?

I'm wanting to get both a Flame & Coral Beauty to put in my 92gal tank.

However I have read that the flame doesn't get along with its own kind.

Has anyone keep both of this fish in the same tank? Did they do OK or fight all the time? Also if you have had both in the same tank please post your tank size.

go to the reef videos page and click thru on the big tanks -- i just saw a video w/ a guy that had a nice flame, cb, and lemonpeel hanging out

the point is they establish territories and fight w/ the same colors so thats prob why his get along

If you plan on keeping both, introduce them at the same time. Leave the lights off for at least 4 hours after you put them in your tank. You may be also to put in the same bucket while acclimating. I did with 2 fish, and they stayed together, they weren't angels, but it's worth a shot.

I added my flame angel 5 months after the coral beauty and they bickered at first but now they get on fine. But I do have a largish tank.

I had a flame, CB and bi-color at the same time. No problems. Different color fish seem to tolerate each other even if they are the same species.

My Flame and Lemon Peel just about get along. Flame ocassionally gives chase, but not for long...

As a general rule, Centropyges do not do well together...Some will fight to the death..Most people that have had luck mixing these Angels have large tanks 6' or larger..I have seen people with smaller tanks also have some luck.. It is best to introduce at the same time and to choose ones with completely different coloration. A Flame and Coral b. should be okay ...I would not acclimate in the same bucket...that is too small a space to find out if they'll get along.
I usually wouldn't recommend mixing them in anything under a 6' long tank...if you do decide to purchase both, watch them closely and be prepared to remove one. [have a spare tank ready]

Different size helps too. I had a flame and a CB in a 75 hex that I put in at the same time, left the light off for a full day and had luck. AS with most fish combinations it is luck of the draw... each fish has it's own temperament

I added a flame to my 240g reef with a coral beauty that had been established 2-3 mos, and the CB harassed it and never let it eat. It lasted a couple days. Next try I took out the CB and put it in my sump overnight until the flame (slightly larger than CB) had eaten, then put the CB back. The flame chased the CB some after that, but both remained healthy and thrived. I suggest placing both at the same time or if not possible, the smaller first or take out the established fish to disorient it. I think the Orange with purple flame and the purple with orange CB see each other as the same color. I added a smaller Emperor to the larger flame and the flame has never even noticed it. Good luck, but I'd have a fish trap available either way.

I have a CB and a flame in my 65g, no problems at all. The first angel in the tank was the flagfin, then a few months later I added the flame. Once he was settled in for a month or so I added the CB, who is the largest of the three. They rarely even posture, and there's no fighting to speak of. Every morning they share the nori, it's like a free for all but no one gets pushed around.

I also have a92 courner reef tank. I'v had a cb in there for 2 and a half years, I'v always wanted a flame angle but have been afraid that they would kill each other.I also have a large yellow tang that I'v had for 2+ years. I'm thinking about adding a blue hippo tang. I think that they will get along because they are 2 differnent spieces

I think you'll be OK but it's not guaranteed.

I have a friend with a 150 gallon tank who has had a multicolor and a flame together for 6+ months, and the multicolor basically never comes out of hiding because the flame will beat up the multicolor if he sees it.

No pygmy angels are reported to get along with conspecifics. That said, many get away with it with few problems however it is always a risk. I have a bicolor and a flame angel in a 125 g with no problem. My good buddy just introduced a bicolor into a 125 with an established coral beauty. They fought terribly for one day and both got pretty beaten up. Now they are good buds and swim side by side and their wounds are fully healed. The question is , do you feel lucky?

It really really does help insure your success to add them at the same time. Lots of rockwork and hiding places can make all the difference

Fish see in different color channels than we do - I'm not all that sure that flames & CB's don't look more similar to each other than they do to us

You must decide on relative size of the fish - To do it again, I'd be inclined to find a female looking flame and similarly sized CB - Whatever you choose, I'd think larger "old" males would be poor candidates - go with younger fish

If your friend can catch the flame and isolate it for a while in a "cage' inside the tank for, say 10days, the flame may very well accept the multicolor once he's let out - problem, I think, is that they have the same blue markings on the rear & the length of those markings are at least in part how flames sex each other. Thus they may be incompatible...but the fact that he's not actually trying to kill the multicolor seems like a good sign -

Just a up-date.

I haven't got a Flame yet,( long story ) but should get one next week. However I did get the CB the other day and put him in my tank. I have a yellow tang that has been in there for about 2 years and at first the tang would chance the CB. But about 2 days later there good friends, they fallow each other around the tank all the time now.

I'll let you know next week about the flame, If my LFS gets one that lives.
