Coral beauty savagely attacked new flame angel

Have a 90 gallon with lots of rock, small bioload and the resident coral beauty for over a year.
Purchased a smaller flame angel and introduced it yesterday. Lights out and move the rock around a little.

The coral beauty attacked it relentlessly to the point I drained some water, removed rock (ugh) and caught the coral beauty. Left him in a tote with some rock, powerhead and heater overnight. In the meantime the flame is out and about, picking at rock and eating everything.

Reintroduced the coral beauty this afternoon and crossed fingers. The coral beauty began to chase the flame but would let go of the chase after a short quick poke at him. The flame never hid, just ran until the coral beauty gave up. Flame would continue to be front and center in the tank. Seems to have really subsided at this point, so I believe and hope this is going to work. The CB seems to be getting used to this new addition.

Do those that have tried this feel this is a good sign, or can this still go bad? Thanks

I would suggest a tank divider for the future, no draining or catching with that method and then I guess like introducing cats or such they can see and smell one another first. LOL I've heard that this will work sometimes, sometimes they will never be happy tankmates, but good luck to you! If the aggression seems to be subsiding then I would think the worst may be over. I know my coral beauty chases all new tank mates for about a day, usually with her best friend my ocellaris clown in tow! After that they both give up, I guess they just want to show off.

Centropyge don't ply well together. I'd expect more trouble.

I have both in a 72 gallon. at the beginning chasing is normal. as long as u hv enough live rock to one to hide. it took a good 2-3 weeks before things settled down.

I have a flame and a potters in my 225. The flame was added about 2 weeks before the potters and they have never shown aggression toward one another. I have had this combination in tanks in the past and never had a problem.. Never tried it with a coral beauty but it sounds like u have gotten it under control. Good luck in the future those are some beautiful fish.

I had a flame, potters and lemon peel in a 150, I added them all at the same time and absolutely no aggression from anyone. Unfortunately I lost all of them a few months later when I added a tang and had an ich outbreak. That's when I joined this forum and learned the importance of a QT

Most of the previous posters are comparing their 8' & 6' displays where they have had success with more than one centropyge. In a standard 4' 90 gallon, I would not try 2 unless adding them at the same time. BEsides tearing apart the entire rockwork and/or using egg crate dividers, you can also try the "mirror method" and see if the coral Beauty chases his own reflection, or get a acclimation box from coral nuggets.com.

I have 3 dwarf angles in my 180(CB, flame, multicolor) and they seem fine, they just need some time.

A 6' standard 180 is doable for 3 centropyge, they have enough territory to stake out as their own. I have a trio of Potter's in my 180, all added at the same time. A 90 gallon or smaller, and without adding the angels at the same time; you will always run the risk of aggression from the eventual dominant specimen in the tank.

I have a 6 foot 150Gallon but the reason why I made my post about having 3 is because I added them all together and I feel like that was the best route too take

I currently have 3 in my 3 foot 65 -- a Flame, Coral beauty and Multicolored. All 3 have been together for just under 2 years. The Coral beauty and Multicolored were together for a year prior to my move (( along with an C. venustus )).

Shortly after my move, I moved the flame into the 65 -- it was in an acclimation box for a week. After its release there was some chasing b/t the Coral beauty and the Flame, but that ended shortly. Once in a while there will be some chasing, but that ends when the fish come within 6 inches of each other. Feeding time show no aggression at all.
