Are they good at eating detritus?

Coral catfish get big and are not good aquarium fish. If you need something to clean up gunk, try a couple of little hermit crabs or some nassarius snails.

Aren't they also have venomous spines? And also when fully grown there a foot long. Not a good thing long term in your 30 gal tank

They are venomous. Also, they do not do well except in groups and since they reach a foot in length and are aggressive, probably not a great idea for normal sized home aquaria.
