Coral died..

Well I'm getting my tank drilled and worked on so I have two holding takes set up in the mean time. Well the fish tank is fine but the coral was in its own tank and somehow the heater malfunctioned and burnt everything... It was on the lowest setting yet heated the water like crazy. Can anyone help me get my feet back on the ground? This was my first major blow in this hobby...

I have GSP, Kenya Tree or a small sarcophyton if any of those interest you.

I had a heater do that to me on a FW tank luckily it was way underpowered and did not kill anything before I caught it.

Feet on the ground? You need to get the tank set up, running, and stable before ANYONE gives you frags. You really dont need a heater in st louisduring the summer unless you had a chiller on it or air conditioning set to 72, why were you running a heater?

You really need to do much more research, reading, before you put more animals lives at risk. We all have setbacks, but learn from the mishaps. If your tank isnt even set up, you dont need frags.

I do have a tank set up and yea, it was under an air conditioning duct. without the heater it was 70 degrees so I think it WAS necessary? hmm.. trust me I've read a lot over the past 2 months and have had help from other members. im not a moron, it was just a shortage...

Ignore clark. He doesn't really know how to speak to people or treat them.
If you felt you needed a heater to either heat water you're mixing or if you're in a split level and it's in the basement or running pc's, t-5's, etc... you very well could need a heater. There are a ton of variables.
If I'm not mistaken clark, your problems recently could have been avoided had you had a controller. Couple hundred bucks on a VERY expensive setup seems like a no brainer.
I recall a guy who's baby was hospitalized and you gave him a hard time for not having a backup plan due to all the outages we had. Seems like you didn't have a backup plan for yourself which could have been easily avoided.
So before you go speaking to the guy like he's an idiot, why don't you think before you speak. The guy at very least deserves to be spoken to like a human.

How much do you really know about his tank/tanks.

Anyways, sorry for the loss and when it's back and stable, let me know and I'll see what I can do to help out.
I don't know what money is like but a controller can help out with a ton of things. Kicking off heaters, kicking on fans, kicking off lights, etc... and you can get one pretty cheap

PM would have been better. So much for your class.

Someone posts that their tank is in temp holdings, their corals died, and they want more with the tank not set up???? Who the hell in their right mind would put more coral in that situation?

As far as how I talk to people, I didnt attack, I stated he was wrong in putting coral under stress like that. And I dont know very many people who keep their house at 70 during a st louis summer.

As far as the guy who didnt have a backup plan, no matter what life throws at you, have a back up plan

I thought you were an okay guy. So much for that.

Class...Class....Class
I didn't PM for a reason. If you truly believe the way you speak to people is ok than that's even another problem.

Listen...I'll help out people when I can and do what I can for people but if you don't think I'm an "okay guy" now than I'm sorry but honestly, I won't sleep any different tonight.

There is nothing wrong in what I said nor do I think I am wrong. As far as how I talk to people or treat people, you have no idea.

Anyone who kills all their coral as it sits in temp holdings, then wants more before his tank is set up and stable, is wrong. And yes it makes me mad to think people will give him stuff to kill again.

I am biting my tongue as I dont want to be banned, but if you ever want to say this crap to me in person, come on over. Easy to type stuff attacking my character in a forum where I cant speak freely.

I have never been anything but supportive of you and your tank, Im sure the stuff from my tank is growing well in yours.

Just wonder where all the anger is coming from.

LOL my point exactly. NOT until his tank is up stable. And my recent problem recently was a thrown circuit, so a controller wouldnt have helped.

#1-That's the problem. You're the only one that doesn't see it.
#2- As I stated "when it's back and stable
#3- You talk about class? Give me a break

So your battery backed up controller would not have kicked off you lights you said ran all day?

I never said I wanted it right away did I? I think you, yourself, should read it more carefully. Again, I'm not a moron, Im not gonna re stock it RIGHT now. I will again in a few weeks when everything seems good. How about you just relax and not get your panties in a bunch, even if people would give it right away I would wait. Besides, I'm only 19 and im still young and learning a ton.

also, you dont know very many people who keep it at 70? My house is kept constant at like 69, my dad likes it cold.

Good luck getting it set up. But you still are rushing it. Get the tank set up, let it cycle, make sure its steady, at least 4-6 weeks, shorter if no cycle.

Fish can take change much more than coral. coral are very sensitive. but they also are animals and need to be respected and cared for.

You didnt say in a while, and I was thinking back to your first posts about wanting a complete setup. When your young its hard to be patient, but in this hobby its the most important lesson.

When your tank is stable enough I have some zoos you can have. but not until, deal?

hey I am totally not getting in the middle of this at all because I like both of you guys. But I have to say my house is at 68 all summer, and I have to have a heater in my tank. Do alot of people really have there AC at 74 or higher, I am really curious because my wife nags at me that its to cold and were running the bill up. But I thought it was normal to keep your house that cold.

Yea I get where you are coming from, thanks so much for the advice and the words. I will need them hardcore in a month. I have the water, live rock and sand thats been running from a previous owner for years. I do water changes and everything still though. I will let you all know when I am ready!

*shrug* my house is set at 76 just to save money, and even then my electric bill is over $400 I cant imagine what it would be at 70

Just in summer usually its heat not cold thats a problem. I dont use heaters at all as my lights and pumps keep my tank heated sometimes too much.
