Coral Exposure

When performing a water change and lowering the level in the main tank, how detrimental to corals is it to be exposed for a time as new water is added. I'm sure it depends on the coral, the one I'm specifically thinking of is my cup coral, which is perched high on my live rock and would be partially left dry if I performed a 20% water change. I am assuming it is a Turbinaria species, correct? If so, then short term should be fine, as these corals are prolific mucus producers.

For the most part, SPS can tolerate a short period of time being exposed to air. LPS on the other hand, may not do so well due to the water that they contain within itself. The weight of what they hold can cause tearing of the flesh that may cause other problems.

I don't think the coral you have in question will be a problem during a water change.

I agree with bothe above posts, I would just make sure to run some tank water over it every now and then so it stays moist. If you have good lighting it can dry a coral out pretty quickly if the lighting gets warm enough.

I often will cut my lights [esp Halides] when my corals will be exposed during a water change.

That said, as long as I keep it 10 minutes or so ... doesn't seem to cause a huge problem.
