Coral getting to big?

grums

New member
Hi,

Posting here on behalf of my grandfather who started a coral tank last year. One of the corals in the tank has grown very fast and become quite large taking up alot of space. I have read cutting the coral isnt a good idea. Just wondering if there are any options to help make it smaller? Also, what type of coral is this?

Thanks.

Did a bit of reading on here about "fragging". Is it safe to take this coral out of the tank and place it into one of the quarantine tanks. Then cut it into smaller pieces and then place it back in the tank?

Cheers.

What supplements do you use?

Hi,

I will have to get back to you. Its not my tank, it is a relatives,. Im posting on here on behalf of him as he has no computer at the moment. I will get a list of the supplements he uses and get back to you.

You should be able to cut that even in the tank no problem with sharp scissors. I wouldn't do it all at once. Cut a couple stalks every week or two. It will grow back from whatever is left behind, but it will take awhile.

Thanks alot. I was worried that cutting it in the tank might cause some "bleeding out" if you know what I mean and could contaminate the tank. I wouldnt know anything about corals myself. My grandfather only started his coral tank last year after years of keeping tropical fish. However he hasnt fragged any corals yet, so wanted to get some advice for him before doing it.

Thanks for the reply. Also, any idea what coral that is as well?

Cheers.

It can leech out a little, which is why I suggested cutting just a little at a time. You could also run carbon, but honestly I think you'll be fine just cutting it a little at a time.

I's be more concerned about those green star polyps in the bottom right :) You might need to get a handle on those too.

Thanks for the reply. I was supposed to ask this in this first post also, but forgot. The green star polyps have spread very rapidly also. What is the best way to frag the gsp. Can you cut it inside the tank or should you remove it and cut it outside the tank?

Thanks again.

you can cut all of it inside the tank to your hearts content. it shouldnt bother anything. although if you want to run a little carbon for the leather, thats understandable. the gsp you can peel/scrape off the rock, and the leather you can cut with scissors or a scalpel.
