Sun polyps, very pretty

Scientific Name
Tubastarea

Common Names
Orange, Turrent, Orange Sun Polyps, Sun Polyps, Branching Octopus

Region
Red Sea, Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Regions

Lighting
N/A, non-photosynthetic

Aggressiveness
Very low, can be easily stung by more dominate species.

Current
High

Hardiness
Recommended for experienced aquarists only.

Placement
Caves, under overhangs, in low light areas with excellent water flow.

The common name, Sun Polyps, that most local fish stores use on this species is basically an oxymoron. It leads many new aquarists to believe the species needs high light where the exact opposite is actually true. These corals have no symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) in their cells so they need no light at all in order to survive. However, since there is no zooxanthellae present these do corals do need to be fed on a regular basis. Target feeding works best. They relish brine shrimp (soaked in a vitamin compound such as Selcon) and also accept any form of phytoplankton or zooplankton. Only advanced and very serious aquarists should attempt to keep this species as they require more time than the average or beginner aquarist is generally willing or able to provide resulting in many un-needed deaths.

thats the biggest sun coral colony i've ever seen. i think $75 is very reasonable. good luck with it. make sure you feed it very regularly because it is not photosynthetic. you need to feed each polyp also.

Thank you all... I have moved my coral to the bottom of the tank and under an overhang now... we will see.. hopefully it will work.... thank you all again for the advice.

that would be one of the weirdest growth patterns in a Tubastrea that ive ever seen. usually they grow in a ball shape, or along a surface.

i would lean towards dendro. very cool piece for a very good price. i usually only see them with a couple heads at LFS

Whatever it is, its a nice and colorful coral for sure. I'd drop $75 on that without a thought myself, and I typically haven't spent much on corals (yet lol).

^lol gweston. be careful with that. this coral needs to be fed quite a bit relatively often. if you cant commit to that sort of thing, may be in over your head
