Coral mounting

Should stags be mounted strait up or at a angle?

Edit: Also I have a brain maze coral, should that be on a completely flat surface? I tried to put directly on the sand but it kept getting covered with it.

stags as well as most all acro's should be mounted at a 45ish degree angle or 90 degree depending on the growth pattern you want. also with the brain i would keep it low in the tank but it doesnt need to be on a flat surface.

no not really, in gereral unless it is a small colonie already you never want to put it strate up. this makes the coral grow in such away that it will sprout more branches from the single stalk than from the base of the coral creating a colonie faster.

exactly. but what you are doing is making the coral branch from that original main trunk "frag" rather than letting the frag grow up into a branch(rather than a trunk) and more coming from the bottom incrustation.

Also, when gluing the frag at an angle parallel to the light, you are greatly increasing the light captured by the coral. keep in mind that is the photosynthetic activity of the embedded xooxanthellae algaes that are responsible for most of the corals growth. When the coral is straight up and down, light capture is greatly minimized. Also you may want to check out garf.org sps propgation pages for excellent pics and descriptions.

This was a small 1" frag I glued flat, just to see how it would grow. The piece of rock is about 4"x4".
