Coral Placement

I bought this "greg hiller" coral (green one) a while back and it's doing great...he told me "put it on the bottom"...now the whole frag is practically covered...where should I put it? I was thinking about gluing it onto a rock and the coral will grow on it? anyways..here's the coral

I'm no SPS expert (yet!) but I'm thinking up higher and in some high flow spot is best. May want to move it up gradually so you don't burn it out, but honestly I'm not sure if that's entirely necessary (depends upon your tank depth and lighting really). I picked up a bunch of SPS frags from RTMA recently and I stuck them in high flow/high light spots and they look happy so far (good polyp extension, but hard to judge growth yet - it's very early!!).

The other photos look great though - nice zoa collection! Hope mine start to take off soon like that!!

Thanks...yeah..the zoas are growing out of control....I thought all sps should be high up (good light) and good flow...but when I bought it from Greg Hiller...he said put it on the bottom?? I think I will find a spot that I wouldn't mind it spreading on and move it up a little to there...I have a spot in front of one of my pumps that I might move it to...is there such thing as too much flow for a coral like this?

Definitely put your SPS in higher flow, on rock, in a well lit part of the tank. Depending on the depth of your tank, and your lights, that often means higher up in the tank.

That red Monti Cap you've got growing in the sand is shocker. I did not know it would do that. That too - as one of your SPS - traditionally goes in the places I mentioned.

All that said... that's where people put SPS because it closely mimics nature. But you seem to be having good success in some unusual places. So it should only get better when you move them.

But if you've got a deep tank... you might consider moving them on intermediate spot before you put them very high up. You can burn them by bringing them into higher light too quickly. They need to adjust. Just like people and tanning.

I will do that. I bought that red monti at a show...actually he just gave it to me since I bought a few other frags from him...it was the size of a dime and it was light pink...he said it got too much light and to put it on the bottom and it will color up. That was in the winter time from the coral show in storrs. I have kept it on the bottom and fairly shaded. It's grown really quickly. I think I will leave that one there or move it up slightly if I can find a place where I think it will fit in....that green one (ID PLEASE) is super bright and I would love for that to spread...so I'll bring that up slightly and put it on something to grow on.

If that monti cap red's up in low light, then by all means keep it low.

As for that green thing, it looks like some kind of acropora... but it's anyone's guess which one.

Yes higher up in the tank is where you want to put that Acro. It may be encrusting more because it is trying to spread out to get more light. The cap will color up more the lower light it receives, but will grow slower (which with caps, is not a bad thing necessarily).

One more ? to all. I have living copepods in my GFO phospan reactor. Is that a problem. Seems a little weird. I'm due to change my GFO soon anyways.

You'll find them every where. Signs of a good, healthy system and not a problem. You can try and save them when you change your gfo, or just dump them. You have thousands more I'm sure.
