Coral Propagation Program Thread

I have started a thread at our website to discuss my ideas for this program. It can be found at

GIRS.org Coral Propagation Program Thread

Please post comments relating to my proposed program on that thread. Lets keep this open as a brainstorming idea. Everyone needs to weigh the cost/benefit of this program both in terms of effect to the sustainability of this hobby and in terms of how it effects us personally.

Personally I think it makes more sense to do this with only three people from the club. Sone and myself do this already and it works out great. When his tank was going thru a bad time He took over all his expensive pieces. So after 6 months He got all his pieces back, plus all my choice corals. We have an understanding that if anything dies in either of our tanks we just replace it no questions asked. We also make sure not to buy doubles, before he or I place an order we make sure one of us don't have the piece already.

The negative side of it does cost more money to split corals between only two people but frags are always available if one of us needs a replacement, I trust him enough to give him a few hundred of dollars in corals at one time knowing that I will get paid back in the future with corals he purchases. Also I know what he adds to his tank and he knows what I add to my tank, we both are careful making sure we don't have pests that could infest each system.

I think with the club trying to do the same thing a couple things could happen:

1) When buying rare frags $80 for a half inch piece, it's going to take a long long time before everybody gets and equal share which could intern **** people off

2) What happens if the tank crashes? 10 people are going to be ****ed at one dude

3) people not agreeing on what they all want to purchase... some like SPS, others softies.

4) Some people like myself aren't really interested in a group tank. So I don't think it would be fair to take the GIRS Money and put it towards a group tank vs. a speaker. (not sure if this was the idea in the first place)

On paper I think it sounds like a good idea but the way this club seems to "fight" sometimes I think it's a ticking time bomb

of course This is my Opinion so whoever doesn't agree be tactful about it, remember this is only a hobby!

You will actually be surprised how close what you described as your situation with Sone is to what we are planning. This plan actually came from my experiance working with Billy and another local reefer in the same way you guys are working together. We just want it to be a wider scale deal and get more of the club involved. We also want to see more sharing and less selling to fellow members. It just promotes a better atmosphere within a club and it is like having free tank insurance.

Now to answer your concerns.
I will be as tactful as I can. :p

1) I would hope we were not buying such small pieces as they could not be fragged. Also, through the program linked above the purchase would be voted on before a purchase was made.

2) There is no "tank" the frags would be distributed through several members. Thus insuring the corals survival and avoiding this issue.

3) Again, it would all be put to a popular vote using a better polling service than RC. One that requires you to sign in to vote.

4) No group tank involved. As for spending club money, this would only happen if it was voted in by the members and the money used would be used to purchase corals to be spread throughout the club and to infuse some new species into our state wide collection.

As for fighting, everything is described and discussed before hand. It will also be held in writting. Not too much room for fighting and the redundancy of using multiple tanks to growout these corals will lessen the need to argue or fight if a frag is killed due to a tank crash.

Sounds like its well planned out. I followed the link and read your proposal. Seems like all bases are covered. Hope it works out as planned. could have some great potential for years ahead.
