Coral QT tank setup question

I have been reading about some horror stories about flatworms and aptasia, etc coming in on corals. I think I want to start QTing corals but had some questions.

Do you set it up just like a fish QT tank? Can you do only corals or do you need fish in their too? I usually see frag tanks with fish in them but not exactly sure why. Do you need a protein skimmer? Sump?

What kind of lights can you use? I would like to use some cheap LEDs. I have seen some on ebay but also want the corals to do well while they are in QT.

I'm going to start with a tank, top, light and heater. I'll use 1 live rock and a hang on back filter. I'll just grab a cheap orbit Marine light and has Coral acclimation modes already programmed in.
