There are many possibilities which will cause your coral to bleach (turn white).
Just a few of the possibilities:
1) Salinity is too low. Should be 1.024-1.027
2) Magnesium is too low: should be 1250-1350
3) Lighting bulbs are getting old. Should be replaced at least once per year.
4) Calcium should be 380-450, alk: 7-11 dKH You should not allow your alk to swing by more than 2 dKH or this can cause these type problems with some coral.
5) Phosphates and nitrates too high. Phosphate should be less than 0.03 and nitrates should be at zero, certainly not higher than 30 ppm.
6) You just started running GAC, which will increase the light penetration.
7) Heavy metals present. You should be using RODI water.
8) Not using a skimmer or using one that is too small.
