Coral with Blue Tang and Tibicen Angelfish
Hello,

I am thinking to add some Coral in my tank. I have a Blue Tang and a Tibicen Angelfish. Any suggestion from where should I start.

2nd I am also thinking to add a Raccoon Butterfly. Is any coral compatible with Raccoons.

And for the coral, do I have to do TTM and quarantine along with any other changes in main tank.

Thank you,

Raccoon Butterfly is not coral safe, perhaps with the exception of very few soft corals. Tibicen Angelfish is generally not considered safe with hard corals, but t might be fine with soft corals. Blue Tangs are mostly coral safe although rarely you can get one that nip fleshly corals.

Ideally you should quarantine anything that is wet. But quarantining coral is not an easy job. You need a quarantine tank with coral quality lighting and good filtration. Depending on the coral specie you can add certain medication that target certain parasites like redbugs or flatworms. But you can not use copper, hypo, or etc.

What about TTM the corals. I hate using medication.
For the light in quarantine, can I use regular light bulb?

TTM only works for Ich, and only for the host. For coral parasites look up using Bayer complete as a dip, no need for long term medication but it does not replace a long term QT. (not many actually do full scale QT for coral)

Thank you all.

Please give me an advise as I am very much confuse.

I never had coral, but I am thinking to add some. And my question is shall I stick with the FOWLR or add some corals.

I have three choices.
Soft coral
Raccoon Butterfly
Saddleback Butterfly.

Thank you

This depends on what you would like to have in your tank and how much effort you are willing to make to maintain your tank. In my opinion corals are great but keep in mind they require hell of an effort to maintain. Your water needs to be poor in nutrients (Nitrate and PO4) and you should maintain stable levels of certain components such as Ca, Mg, Alk and etc. You need strong lights and at the mean time make sure lights dont heat up the water. Water temp needs to be very stable as well.

Having corals also greatly reduce the number of and species of fish you can have. Not only because some eat corals but also due to the nutrient considerations. Perfectly acceptable levels of nitrate and phosphate for a fowlr tank can cause be disastrous in a reef tank due to the intense lighting and resulting algae bloom.

Thank you for the detail explanation.

I like to have the coral, but due to time restriction, no coral for now.
