i bought one and it makes 5 gallons in 4-5hrs.
there is more water coming out of the red than the blue. is this normal or may i just have dirty water?

also should it take that long to make 5g?

Thats probably about right. RO output depends on three things, water temperature, water pressure and to a much lesser extent tap water TDS. That particular one is rated to produce 50 GPD at 65 psi and 77 degrees and around 250 ppm TDS. If you water pressure is less, temperature is lower and TDS is higher the output will be less. Take a look at www.buckeyefieldsupply.com , Russ has a real nice calculator on his site that shows you what to expect if you know your parameters. He also sells great units and replacements when you are looking to upgrade yours in th future

AZ,

I also have one of these units, and I know they're probably not considered the best, but I'm getting 0-1 ppm TDS out of the RO side and 0 ppm out of the DI side consistently.

I've had it for almost a year and have changed the prefilters once.

It must be that my source TDS is pretty small. If that's the case, is there really any reason for me to upgrade to some of the more expensive units? It seems like this one is doing great, or is there something that the more expensive ones can do that this one can't?

Thanks

Sounds like you have really good tap water. If its working that well it probably would not be cost effective to upgrade. I'd be curios what your tap wate rTDS is, its got to be pretty low.

same unit

same unit

I have the same unit and love it one thing for shure is the higher the pressure the better it works and it will make 50gals a day for you
Good Luck

They are generally known as a low quality unit but they seem to be working for you. I would venture to say with a TDS over 300 or so they would not work so well and you would not be as happy. When it comes time to replace filters at the 6 month mark make sure you get better prefilters and carbons as the ones they come with are marginal at best.

Actually that's what I did, I bought the best prefilters I could. Also bought a good DI resin canister but haven't had to use it yet.
