I am about to purchase a skimmer for my 29gal reef that im putting together, I have a 20 gal sump. What Im looking for is a skimmer that dosent require alot of attention. Does the coralife fit the bill and is it anygood, its in my pricerange.

Well I bought one at Coral reef aquatics, but it wont fit in my sump. It seems its to tall, I guess i will have to cut a hole in the back of my stand and hang it on the outside of the sump, of course that means I will have to pull the whole thing out farther from the wall. All this is after I rebuild my sump, I broke a baffle trying to get skimmer in. Lesson learned dont use thin glass to build baffles with.

Sorry to hear about your troubles..Dont feel bad thats two common mistakes.. Never use plate glass from homedepot for sump baffles..Always plan space for your skimmer. Its odd that its to tall. Did you get the one rated for a 65 gallon.. Its a pretty small skimmer.

why dont you use home depot plate glass?

its not that i have any in my office for my sump or anything...i'm just, you know, askin in general...

(whistles and looks at sky...oh look! a cloud!)

That is if you can't help being a bull in a china store :)

It's all in the thickness of a glass plate. I never had any problem with my 1/8 inch thick plate glass from K&M. I suspect Home Depot sells thinner stock.

HomeDepot and lowes glass is more for replacing the glass in a picture frame IMO... It is very thin and very easy to break.. I use 3/16 or 1/4 in sumps I build. Glass is dirt cheap. IMO its better to have a lil thicker then you might need an not have to worry about breaking it.. Cause if a baffle gets broke 6 months down the road after the tank is stocked and running.. Well then you have a mess. For most sumps with 3 baffles and a refuge.. 1/4 glass will cost you less then 20 bucks.. For small sumps less then 10.00 Mariner just built a sump out of a 15 gallon his baffles cost 5 bucks for 3 of them. out of 3/16 glass.

3/16 and 1/4 inch glass are pretty hefty. I would go for it if I was building baffles for a large sump or a glass top for a 30 inches or more span.

1/8" is more than enough for my sump made out of 20L and I am not all that gentle with my equipment. The 1/8" glass sheets have been banged up a few times for sure. I believe that the shorter span (across the 20L) makes it much sturdier.

K&M Glass is a good place.. They are right by the parkway off of sparkman. You can order it by phone but they will probably want you to prepay for it. Tell them you want the edges seamed. It just takes the sharp edge off. They also do a pencil edge so its round but that costs 4X as much.HTH
