Coralife Vs Prizm Skimmer

I am looking at a skimmer for my 55 gal reef aquarium(new to setting up the reef). Which one would be a better skimmer

CORALIFE SUPER SKIMMER MODEL 65 or
Red Sea Prizm Protein Skimmer up to 90 gallons

I know that the Prizm has been around for a while. The LFS guys have mixed responses, one guy goes for Prizm and the other for the Coralife. Anyone used both or know about comparative performance.

I have never owned a prizm but I love my coralife super skimmer. I also run it on my 55 gal tank. I have the 125 though, you may want to think about going with the 125. I always try and get the next size up, in terms of gph, when purchasing a skimmer

Coralife

I have a buddy who has a super skimmer (coralife) and looks to work good. I bought a prizm when i started and fiddled with the thing for a month before i gave up. It was either nothing, or overflow. Never got it to produce any sign of skimmate. Bought a used remora and it worked the first day. I have seen prizm's with skimmate in them, but i am not sure how long it took to get it and i was not impressed with the look of the water in the tank (looked dirty).

Coralife for sure. We have a CSS 125 and it works great. They can be a little touchy a first though. There are alot of little mods that you can do to them to better their performance.

I don't know about the coralife but I have a prizm sitting in my basement lol.
I bought it new and a piece broke off right away when I was setting it up. It still worked the way it was suppose to but the air tube was always clogging with salt and was really a pain. So most of the time it really did'nt skim.
It's built cheaply and poorly IMO. I would'nt waste my money on it if I were you.
I replaced it with a HOB remora which works much better and no headaches.
If you have a sump theres alot more options for skimmers. If not I'd go with an aqua C Remora or better yet Remora pro.

Yes with skimmers it's always better to go bigger than what it's rated for.

avoid the red sea prisim skimmer, I have one... er had, never did work as well as I thought it should.

Don't get a prizum I bought one they are rated for like 90 gallons but really in my opinion they should not be use over a 20 gallon tank. They just don't pull much water. Good Luck

I have the 65 for my 55g. I have had it since feb. It is wonderful. I empty the cup every couple of days. It is usually very dark.

Go with the Superskimmer way better then the Prizm. But Superskimmers tend to overflow at first so you have to watch it and empty the cup everyday. The only thing a Prizm is good for is using the pump as a powerhead.

Here's some skimmate pictures from my CSS65. I no longer have this skimmer running on the tank.

Definetly go with the coralife superskimmer. I would suggest that you go with the 125 on your 55 instead of the 65. I have a 60 gallon reef and I have the coralife superskimmer 125 on it and I think it is wonderful. The bigger skimmer on the tank is the better choice. It pulls a lot of gunk out of the water. Microbubbles may be a problem at first, but time and a few mods clear that problem right up.

And don't forget to check out the mods for the CSS too. I've heard that they can make a world of a difference on the skimmer.
