coraline algae

i've noticed on some of my live rock there is what I believe to be coraline algae but it's white and looks like frosting, is this normal or because it's a new tank [ten days] and will color up over time.

Yes, there will be some bleaching of the coralline during your first cycle. My tank is almost 2 months old and I would say about 30% has returned to purple. Its slow :(

that white "frosty" stuff is the dying of animals on your life rock. Scrub it off out of the tank and then replace it back in the tank. I would also do water changes every 2 or 3 days for the first month or so.

since your tank is new, the best beat would be your coralline is bleaching. when coralline is exposed to air, new lights, new water parameters, etc. it will bleach. its perfectly normal! it will regain its color in a few weeks. :D

thanks for the info i was hoping thats what was happening,[new tank bleaching] as far as scrubbing it off that stuff is like concrete and I would end up making my rocks round

The bleached parts of mine are returning to purple. I never gave any effort in trying to get it off. It turns splotchy grey, then gradually to purple.

buy "Purple Up" from Dr. Foster's and Smith. I used it and my coralline took off. It also adds calcium and won't feed bad algae.

all takes time and patience... it will turn...

lol yup i have calcium buildup on the base of my tank (BB) and it's white at first then the change just amazes you one day ~that is after cleaning up the debri...lol

Sometimes when u turn rocks over, the growth is even more amazing, with purple, red and sometimes orange colors~ beautiful.
good luck!
