I thought this was dead! so far he hasn't proved any thing except that he doesn't know the difference between NH3(ammonia) and NH4+(ammonium)it's not an old term new term thing, there two different things.and if you go back in this post you will see that I said that they add NO3-(nitrate's).why would they risk killing all or some of there clams with toxic NH3 when NO3- is much less toxic and is much easier for the clams zoo to process.i also posted a link to a site that explains the whole process.as for the name calling I think it funny.people do that when they have nothing else to say. can we be done on this soon? I would like to put my energy into something else

Not sure this helps, but a couple of months ago in my lfs, one of the MH bulbs exploded. The bulb still fired without the glass UV protection for several hours before anyone came in to work and noticed it. Many of the crocea clams that were directly under the bulbs experienced some bleaching and the edges of some of the mantles curled..as if they were singed. The bulb was a 175 watt, 10 K Ushio. It took a while for them to get back to normal but all except one completely recovered. Many of the clams did in fact look similar to the pic posted.

Baby clams use ammonia to build up the algae in their mantles when born. Just like macros, they digest ammonia directly. Many things about clams are unknowns, You are right, I need to go back and read my chem books again...weird, I remember a prof saying it was just a terminoligy diff. Im sorry. [violation] crappy state university!

But for what we are saying here, it doesnt make a huge diff which ever one is used...they break down in water just the same...

As far as the whole dumping thing, I should be able to get a Dr. to stop by. It wasnt Shimek...it was Borneman or another guy who came to our local reef club meeting and talked about it in the Solomon Islands...I know it was there that this guy saw it too. Who is Borneman's contemporary whos always talking about propigation? Thats the other guy. I have a friend, reeffreak here, who also remembers that lecture and is going to track down the exact person, and date, and chemical. But dumping of 55g barrels I know for sure.

Thank you Me No Nemo for that post!

danlu_gt: I hope you are still with us.. but if it makes you feel any better about getting the newer bulbs what Me No Nemo has posted is partially making my point. I think the sheilds in your bulb may have wore down with age. I still wouldn't necessarily trust that UV card, no offense but it is cheap and prob not meant for aquaria use. Again I hope to be proven wrong because then I would get one! ;)

I suppose the exact UV output from any two bulbs must vary alot. I remember those tests that Sanjay did where he found that the UV output of a 175watt bulb was more than the output of a 150wattDE w/o the sheild. This might have been a case scenario, but I found it odd and interesting. I then took the glass off of my 70wattDE over a 10g to test things out (the 10g is just a spare tank for some critters and extra corals). No ill effect.

Weird.

i've actually been to a clam farm in malaysia (one side of my family is from there)

they actually do dump barrels of ammona or ammonium (not sure which it was) into the holding areas. I'm not sure how many gallons the barrel is. I was really young when i saw this and i also had no knowledge/interest in reefkeeping at the time...

But... for the record. they do dump/feed it.
