cotton balls

Hello all, I have what looks like cotton balls in my tank (4 or so). They range in size from 1/4 -1/2 in. in diameter.
Any ideas what these are and if I should get rid of them? THANK YOU.

Are the cotton balls red in color? Anything resembling the following thread?

No they are all white.
