Could a seabe anemone and a BRTA Kill anemone

Hello, again:

i have a very important question. Could any of those two anemone kill any fish in my tank. Also if any fish eats a clown fish could it died. Am asking thise question because i had a coral beauty and a per mate clown fish. Couple days ago my male clown fish i found it dead with a scratch, two days later i saw the female dead with some scratch and missing chunck of flesh. and then i found my coral beauty dead. Dont understand what is going on iwth my fish. Could someone tell how to maintane my tank

anemones are certainly capable of catching and killing fish it is what they do...however to me it sounds like you have a mantis shrimp in your tank...and a spearer at that...possibly a large crab even...

only way i can think of finding the culprit is looking at the tank at night with a red lens flash light...look for a large crab or a giant shrimp...if it is a spearing mantis you wont see him but you will see a burrow in the sand bed, or under a rock...look a couple times a night when all the lights are out..(room lights and tank lights)

if nothing appears you may need to submit a sacrificial lamb ( in this case damsel) to the tank and watch him every night for a week or so, and see if anyone comes out to get him...

before doing all this we need more details of your tank though...

especially if you have any shrimp, or crabs that you know of...

all i have for is a 1 cleanner shrimp, 1 arrow crab, 5 green chromi, 1 blue chromi, 1 convict goby, 1 RBTA, 1 seabe anemone, 1 hippo tang, the tank is a 90 gallon about 120 lbs of rock 6 mushrrom, 10 lettuce leather, and a 20 gallon refugium. one question couls rust heart my tank

depends what is "rusting" all metals will oxidize to some extent, only one i can think of is completely harmless and that would be IRON (Fe)...all others will pose a problem. oxidizing steel will pose a risk as there are several different metals composing steel, some of those could be copper, and aluminum, and will leach out with the iron "rust" and both would be very bad in your tank water...

only tanks a couple pennies to start killing off inverts..

all that said...i dont think Oxidation from copper or aluminum and certainly not iron will harm your fish...

how long and how big is he???

arrow crabs have been known to take down a slow moving or sleeping fish. the reason i don't think it's was your anemone is that they would have eaten the whole fish. i also agree probably not copper or the rust ( but get the rust out and away ) as that would have likely affected the more delicate invertebrates too.

not ruling out the hitchhiker shrimp, keep an eye on that crab, they use a spear too.

far too much stuff in a 3 month old tank for someone who hasnt done the research first...

i never even saw the hippo listed there...he could very well have done the surgery on the fish...though i didnt think they were overly aggressive fish...

so could it be aggressive, i did a WATER CHECK AN EVERYTHING WAS GOOD.
MY SALTWATER WAS 1.22
PH: 8.0 AND I ADD IT BUFFER, BUT BEFORE WAS AT 7.5
NO NITIRTE OR NATRITE
NO AMONIA
COULD SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO MAINTANE MY TANK WHEN TO DO A WATER CHANGE, WHEN TO ADD CALCIUM AND ETC... THANK YOU VERY MUCH.....

yes coral beauties can be aggressive and aren't recommended for a reef tank.

i assume your SG is 1.022 ( not 1.22 ) and this is no good for invertebrates, you need to slowly raise this to 1.024 - 1.026

your pH is ok'ish now ( shoot for a little higher 8.1 - 8.4 ) and you should never raise your pH by more than .2 per 24hr period. 7.5 to 8.0 is to much to go up in on shot.

i do 25% water changes per month which works out to a 10G weekly change. the only way to know when to add calcium, etc. is to test the levels in your tank. you should never dose anything you are not testing for, to easy to mis-dose and cause problems.


your system is to young to have all those fish or any anemones in it. most would recommend a minimum of 1 year before adding an anemone or at a minimum 6 months. all fish should be added one at a time gradually, allowing time for the system to recover.

my best advice for you would be to ( if you can ) take the hippo ( going to get to big for your tank ) and the anemones back to the LFS and invest in some more test kits. then take your time and do some reading here on RC, the new to the hobby forum is very helpful and you can learn a lot.

take your time, research and you will have a much better SW experience.
