Could anybody ID These Three Corals ?

I am not stumped!!!! Well maybe a little bit :) .... Now if this was in your reef and not on the other side of the planet I could probably see it in person and I could come up with a positive ID.

Hey, somebody fly over there and ask for a bunch of frags (beg on the front step) and bring them back, let them grow out for 6 months and then post them again. Then I could tell you what we are looking at :) . But until that time I am not stumped, just confused, lol

Chris @ RM

Wow, this is a great thread. Every informative. I guess I'll throw in a few here myself. Wondering if #2, 3, and 4 might be the same. Thanks in advance.

1) Much deeper blue in person. Moderate growth rate. Colony pic.

2) Started to develop pink tips in the last couple of months. Fast growth rate. Colony pic.

3) Similar to #2 but not as green. Also developing slight pink tips. Very fast grower. Colony pic.

4) This one was yellow when I first got it. Maybe it's not getting enough light at it's current location? Moderately fast grower. Colony pic.

5) The color has shifted slightly since this pic was taken. Slow grower.

Europe gets corals from different suppliers and regions than we do.

Chris @ RM

Cool thread, long time no talk Chris! My tank is finally up and ready for special orders. :D I need to visit your facility next time I'm in LA.

Anyway - regarding this - I have noticed lots of corals on Euro websites that we don't typically get here. I know the grass is always greener, but they do have some incredible specimens that I just haven't seen here. Is it illegal for them to send corals into the US? Like do some expidited (expensive  ) shipping? Or is that legal? Just wondering, sorry to sidetrack the thread.

I just picked up a mystery coral, I'll post it later.

Bogg,

My reply is kind of hidden in a post on the ninth page so here it is again....
"The photo is quite small, but from the loose branching structure and the "Crayola Tabletop" coloration pattern I believe that this is a A. desalawii. But I could be wrong as I can't see the corallites structure. If you can post a larger photo (or a closeup) I can help even more."

Nice piece though,

Chris @ RM

Undertai,

Nice to hear from you again!

#1 A. cerealis

#2 A. austera - kinda small for me to give a really accurate ID.

#3 A. gomezi - same as above- too small for a good ID.

#4 M. nodosa in the front and M. mollis in the back

#5 M. danae- with the large tuberculae and the blue polyps.

Thanks again,

Chris @ RM

Pookstreet,

Thanks for joining the fray. I don't think 2, 3 and 4 are the same. They seem to have different axial and radial corallites structures between them.

#1 A. yongei- fits the bill as a slower grower, has scalloped radial corallites with flower shaped polyps.

#2 A. abrolhosensis- with long tubular axial corallites, smallish radial corallites and fuzzy with polyps.

#3 A. nobilis with even smaller radial corallites and shorter axial corallites.

#4 A. aspera as I have had several during my reef keeping years and they almost always turn out this way. They come in with defined radial corallites but as they grow the corallites seem to get shaved off. They also have a bit thicker branches than their counterparts.

#5 A. maryae- or so we are calling it as this species according to Veron only comes from the Red Sea.

#6 A. turaki with the long, thicker and tubular radial and axial corallites.

Very nice photos! Give me some more if you have them, from what I can see you have lots of stuff that is pretty cool and rare.

Chris @ RM

Fliger,

How have you been? Call me up if you need anything in particular.

Yes, you are correct they have access to suppliers and countries that we don't. We have to consider that there are over 200 species of Acropora and we really only see a third of that regularily. The other species that populate the reefs around Indo, etc have to go somewhere as I know they are being collected. Also keep in mind that the nicest pieces much of time do not go to us in the U.S. as we are quite cheap and we refuse to pay for the "cherry stuff". The suppliers know this and they send the best stuff to the discerning hobbyist= Europe- has Reefers that have been in this decades longer than we have. They know what they want and they will pay alot more for them. This is at least from what I have heard. I am pretty sure it is legal as the trade of Live Animals is retricted by CITES (for the most part) they are a few countries that are not within the CITES influence for some reason or another.

But for the most part I think they are available and legal, but we just won't pay the prices that they require because we are outbid.

I hope to see your mystery coral soon....

Chris @ RM

Thanks for the quick response Chris and the compliments. I have cool and rare stuff??? Don't know what that means  I buy what I can afford and sometimes I splurge just a little :D

Wow, I had a blue slimer all this time? I have been thinking it was A. hoeksemai due to the deep blue coloration. I did pick up a frag of the blue slimer from your store a few weeks back. That frag had much thicker branches than mine though. Any thoughts?

In regards to #6, all the A. turakis I have seen have much longer and thinner branches than my piece. Of course, that's just my untrained eyes. I was told by a friend a while back that it could be A. navini. Didn't believe him so here I am :D Do you think that's a possibility?

BTW, I loved visiting your shop. I wished I lived closer. But I am sure I'll find my way back there soon in the near future. Thanks.

Thanks Chris. I'll be in LA in 3 weeks and hope to drop in.

Same goes for sushi and other fresh fish cuts. Better watch it though, I've said this before on other forums and quickly got bashed. It seems like the Japanese also have the market on some of the cooler corals.

Here is one more. It has lost a lot of color since the pic was taken but it's healthy. Polyp extension is incredible. Hopefully it'll regain it former colors once it gets some TLC.

I want to thank you again for your answers to my previous ?'s on pg 8.

First heres a closer shot of the one you felt wasn't formosa. It has coloed up a bit since last pic and it is very slimmy.
