Could it just be color darkening?

I have a male ocellaris clown, approx. 9-11 months old. Been in my tank 8 of them. They do not have an anemone to host in - in fact, I have no corals either.

Yesterday I noticed a small black spot very close to, nearly part of, the black surrounding the middle white stripe. It does not appear to be protruding, nor does it appear to be a sore, though I am having a little difficulty getting a great look at it.

He appears to be swimming and eating fine. No other tankmates are showing any signs of distress. I suspected black ich, but after doing some searching, 1) I can find few pics of black ich, and 2) I've seen mention of clowns getting darker as they mature. If this spot weren't round, I'd be more willing to accept the latter, but I cannot find any pics of that either.

I tried to extract the fish from the tank for a closer inspection, and possible freshwater dip, if needed, but that only succeeded in getting me wet :)

Any ideas, advise, or pics you could share with me? I don't want to do anything drastic, ie take the rocks out to catch him, if it is likely that he's fine. Like I said, everything else is normal.
