couple first time shark questions

So I am slowly setting up a tank and would like to put a pair of pups in it, prolly bamboo. So as i am planning this all out I have a couple questions that should be easy for you guys to answer so.... I wouldn't mind a small amount of corals maybe zoas, just something for a little color. Is there anything I should definitely avoid? Also if getting two pups does it matter if they go in together or should they be added at different times?

Just try to stay away from anything with a bad sting, don't want to hurt them. And how big of a tank? At the LFS I work at people think they have a "big 'ole 55", and they want to throw some sharks in there...

well here is the deal... my 19 month old loves my fish tanks so i got a 180 for his room. I want to give him a little coral with a few fish and a pair of shark pups. I also have a 8x2 round plastic tub in the garage waiting for them, just have to setup filtration on it. I would like to keep them in the 180 for as long as possible then transfer them to the pond and hopefully be able to get some eggs out of the originals.

do a pair of epaulettes they grow rather slowly. around 2 inches a year. if you get a small pair of them you could keep them in a 180 for a few years or more. they will probably reproduce. i have a pair that is about 4 years old maybe 5 but they are only 18 and 20 inches long. the male trys to breed the female but they are both a little small for breeding yet. you could do bamboos too. but having a 8x2 pond ready to go is always a good thing to have just incase they get too big.

Well, I have spent 2 months reading about sharks and picking up everything i need for the 180 and get half of the sharks next step together and now new possibilities are thrown at me... guess im back to square one. Guess it could be worse though, could be told there is no way to make it happen. also dont think it has been answered yet but does it matter if both sharks are added together? I am a little worried about increased bio load from adding 2 together. oh, and by all means jump in, saves me a question later

Get Scott Michaels book Aquarium Sharks and Rays.

I may, it seems from my time reading here and other sites that people in about the same spot i am with my tank start asking questions based off what they read in this and other books and it seems that they are usually told that they need to rethink their plan... I am trying to do my best to over plan to make sure my animals are happy

If you have an 8 ft stock tank you are miles ahead of most asking this question on the board. IMO epaulettes handle smaller spaces better than bamboos. Many will disagree because they grow bigger than the tropical cats and some of the smaller bamboos like the Arabian or Grey.

Filtration could be and issue with a pair, but if they are small and you target feed you will likely be fine. A good skimmer always helps. I do rec feeding baby/pups 5-6 days a week. Adults can be spaced out farther.

It doesn't really matter how you add your sharks. Often cheaper to add them together to save on shipping.

I can point you toward small captive bred eppies if you are seriously considering going this direction.

As for sizes. The LA suggestions. I take them for the current size of the fish/elasmobranch for sale. In no way should you consider those sizes to be for the life of the animal. For instance, they currently have a blue spotted tusk and rec 500 gal. This fish gets 3.5 feet long. Scott Michael's recs are undersized as well but the book is excellent. Krj-1168, on this board and SRC, I would consider him an expert on sizes and husbandry requirements. He has so much info posted on SRC and worth reading as apart of your research. The other must read is the elasmobranch husbandry manual. Google it.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks everyone for your input. Some of it helped, some of it gave me grand visions that have me rethinking my plan... but i do appreciate all of it. If I do end up looking at eppies I will definitely keep you in mind alprazo
