Well I just finally put my emperor into my display tank. He's been in QT a little while and was really doing lousy, so I moved him into the display last night. I left the lights off all night and today and turned them on around 5:00pm and got some pictures.

Nothing TOO special, but I really like the fish.

I also got a Dussimieri tang, as soon as it gets a little more comfortable I'll get some shots of it as well :)

I know this one is a little blurry, I'm still pretty bad at manual focusing apparently. It looks clear to me through the viewfinder but not when I take the shot.

Make sure your diopter is set correctly to your eye's prescription. This is the little wheel next to your viewfinder. Your always looking through the viewfinder @ f/2.8 with the 24-70, with the widest aperture is selected at rest. If the viewfinder is inaccurate, it can really throw you off with the DOF! Neat shots and beautiful fish!
 
Beautiful fish. I really want one but I'm worried about it eating all my softies.

Some cameras have a feature where you half press the shutter release and then manual focus and it will beep and/or light up the focus point when you're in focus. Of course you have to keep a focus point on your subject for it to work.
 
Hmmm, thanks TS. I forgot about that diopter roller wheel, I've have to give that a shot when I get home. It was really irritating, I took a lot of manual focus shots of the emperor and they all turned out like crap ;)
 
Fabulous group of fishes Recty. I think all the polyps on my corals would dive into their coralites if I were to hold up a picture of your fish in front of my tank. The group shot with the Emperor turned towards the camera as if to say "You lookin' at me? Are you looking at ME??" is delightful.

Yes, set the diopter wheel. It makes a huge difference. It will not however, correct astigmatism.

I also have issues being confident focus is razor sharp right where I want it when looking through the viewfinder and focusing manually. It sucks when one views shots one thought were spot on only to be disappointed by focus issues. LiveView and remote LiveView good but not always usable.
 
That is a good shot, hummer. The emperor in that picture looks like it hasnt fully transitioned to adult to me, it still even has the lines in the face and forehead.

But it does look good :)

BTW, this is the first picture I opened in CS4 ;)

What is cool is it looks like the emperor has multiple rows of teeth.
 
Oh actually that picture was taken at the Boston Aquarium, I don't have my tank running yet, sorry couldn't answer that question, but I am glad you like it! :D

Thanks Titus, it's been quite a bit of fun learning to use the camera and lens you recommended, I'm really glad I went with this setup, it does exactly what I wanted.

Hummer, I'm using a Canon 50D with a 24-70mm f/2.8.
 
By the way, is there anyone you guys recommend for printing pictures? There isnt really anywhere good up here in Alaska to get it done, so I'll have to do it online.

I'd like to get a couple fish pictures printed on some type of metallic paper, I cant seem to find somewhere good to do that.
 
Isn't it wonderful the visual goodness and detail that can be observed when an interesting and good looking subject appears through quality optics onto a quality image sensor and is post processed nicely? Yummy.

I don't think the angel has rows of teeth (like a shark which are continuously moving forward in anticipation of replacing and being replaced) as much as a "spike strip" at the opening of the mouth to grab and hold.

A teeny tiny observation which is not meant at all to detract from the fabulous image you've produced. To me, it might have been even more fabulous if you had been able to crop the image slightly left, so that the fish's entire right pectoral fin was evident. I would gladly swap some empty black space on the right for more of the fish on the left. I realize that the image captured may not allow for that.

Your fish are well armed what with the tangs' tail blades and the emperor's blue operculum spikes.
 
I completely agree on the cropping. Unfortunately, that is the far left of the image, I cant crop there. I would really liked to have been able to see the entire pectoral fin also, but I cant produce what was in the shot ;)

I made a 2nd one later with more black space cropped. I have it as a 4000 x 3200 so I can make a nice crisp clean looking 20x16 for my wall :)

Here's the close up of his teeth. I wasnt TRYING for a teeth shot, so it isnt the best focus but it turned out pretty well all things considering.

Oh come on! Just enlarge the canvas and the left side and clone brush in the missing area. Should be a snap with CS4, no? ;)

2nd round cropped shot is much more powerful. Bam! I like how the eyes are not in the center.

Nice "enlargement" on the teeth. They are both more tooth like and more organized in loose rows than I would have imagined. Those look like cutting teeth, not just grab and hold spikes.

Don't you love how even a significantly cropped portion of an image taken with the 50D can be an ok image?

Look at the detail in the skin around the mouth in the teeth shot! Excellent lens. Very good camera. Beautiful fish.
