course of action for stressed corals

Recently [last week] I put in a new larger sump and plumbed in a 40g tank to run inline with my 62g. New water was matched as close dt parameters and temperature as I could get. Over the course of the next 5 days my sps have lost some color.I would attribute this to stress caused by what would amount to a 50% water change and chemical changes. Now my question would be,what can I do to relieve the stress on these corals....should I lower light somewhat and increase feeding?? leave light the same and increase feeding? Or do nothing and see what happens ? Any thoughts or advice would calm me down as well :) cheers ...Bob

The dead rock is probably releasing a good amount of phosphates into the tank. Can you test for them?

What was it before? While .09 is not horrible, or anything, if you were near zero a few days ago, the change is pretty quick.

My po4 generally fluctuates between 0.08 and 0.14....no higher or lower.... po4 was not checked before sump change and 40 hook up..although gfo was changed during refit.

Thanks for the replys guys but none of them really have anything to do with what I asked :) I understand my tanks are goingvto be a little out of whack for a while and I Will get things stabilized again. However what I wanted to know was whether there is anything else I could do to alleviate any more undue stress on my sps.So far none are in danger of dying that I can see, only some loss of color....cheers.....bob

Just leave it alone and let it do its thing. I would not do any water changes for a bit as you just did a rather large one in theory. Just keep up your normal routine and it will turn around Ime

That's what I meant. Normal routine. 10% WC a week.
Yes, maybe it's good to skip a week for now, of course...

How was the sump constructed? It may have to do with the materials used to make it. Also 0.09 PO4 is on the high side and I would lower it slowly with water changes not GFO. Remove the GFO as this stuff strips the water very fast and causes more harm then good. I also agree that changing water should have not affected them unless the water you are using is bad. Some newly made up salt batches can do this because the batch is bad. Lowering your light will lessen the stress but in a healthy tank the should bounce back very fast. I would like at other possibilities of what could have gone wrong.

sump was constructed using glass and arcryrlic and rtv108 silicone and allowed to cure for 3 weeks before install..Loss of color I believe was due to large po4 drop, from 0.09 to 0.02. po4 as of last night was 0.06 and corals are already showing good signs of recovery .....whew :] cheers ...bob
