Cozumel trip -- looking for tips

Anybody have any suggestions or experiences. No diving but hopefully we'll do quite a bit of snorkeling.

Stay on the EAST side of the island where all the large resorts are. The west side where all the cruise ships come in is very junky. Its worth visiting, but be prepared to feel like you are in a third world country. Also, be prepared to have the locals attack you to come into their stores to shop. We got very tired of that. If you stay on the east side, you'll be happier. Snorkel Palancar reef. Very nice. If you want to take an excursion head to Xel-ha(eco-park with snorkeling) and Tulum(mayan ruins) on the mainland. It was a very enjoyable experience, but be prepared to be gone a whole day.

Very good point. They always bug you to come into their shops. I will never forget this one mans honesty. He comes out and asks us to come in and see this things for sale.

" Come in here and look around. I am mexican and will rip you off, but I will rip you off less than the others"

It was too funny. Ended up buying a bunch of junk I didn't need.

We went to Rivera Maya region and stayed in the Bahia Principe Akumal (sp). Great all inclusive resort AWAY from all of the hustle and bustle of the city and had a private beach. From there we went to Cozumel and went snorkeling and toured the sea turtle farm, went to Coba, Chichen Itza, toured a Mayan town, went to some ancient Mayan sacrificial pits and other things as well. The travel agency we went with was Apple Vacations and felt very taken care of.

+1 on Bahia Principe though we stayed in the Coba section last March. Lots of good food choices, decent rooms, great prices, drinks were a little watered down but hey, it's all inclusive. Quantity over quality. Stay at Tulum though. Awesome pool and good location but windy beach.

Don't drink the water

Or eat freshly washed fruit. That will get you every time....

I will also be in Cozumel soon Mark and one of the tours we signed up for are a reef and a shipwreck snorkel. I can get the info from our friends we are going with if you want me to. Also +1 on going to Xel-ha and Talum both are FANTASTIC places to visit. In Xel-ha its all snorkeling and you see an amazing amount of fish and sea life. I couldn't believe I was actually swimming with a sea turtle, a barracuda as long as I am tall, and huge parrotfish. Xel-ha is a huge tourist attraction though so don't think you will have it all to yourselves but it is a very large place so it won't feel crowded. Talum is the only Mayan city to be built on the coast and the ruins are in amazing shape. I went on my honeymoon to the Riviera Maya also with Apple Vacations and Andy is right, I felt they were great to deal with. This time I'll be in the area on a cruise so we won't get as much time in Cozumel as I would like but at least we get to go to that area again.

We're staying at the Aura Wyndham Grand Resort. We were taking the advice and trying to get as far from D town as possible. This one had very few negatives on tripadvisor. Many are 50/50 or more with negatives. This one is adults only and since the kids are being left behind we figured we'd take advantage!

I'll take any info you have to offer. Jenny doesn't want to try diving so snorkeling will have to do (this time). I may do a instructor dive to see how I do. Found some good recomendations about scubawithalison.
