Anyone know what he is? Should I melt the butter and cut up a lemon?

General rule is: "Bigger claws mean bigger troubles". It's not always the case, but most of the crabs that are content to pick at algaes have smaller claws in proportion to their bodies.

Crabs are great at stirring the sand, particularly around your rockwork. The trouble is that eventually they nearly all get bigger, lose their purely vegetarian ways, and become trouble.

My rule is that once the carapace is more than 1" across the crab has to go.

Well tried the bottle trap last night. Caught 2 Nassirius snails and a peppermint shrimp.
:uzi:
This is now crab Jihad, the mother of all crab wars. I will keep you posted.

I hate to admit it, but I once had to stab one with a shiskebob skewer because I couldn't trap it.

So continuing on with the story, now that bad brown mithrax is gone and I am feeling lucky to have caught him I am looking in my tank last night enjoying the view. When low a behold there on my new Gorgonian sits my emerald crab trying to pick polyps of off it. At first I was shocked and in disbelief thinking he must be picking off detritus or algae. So I got out the trusty magnifying glass to get a closer look. Oh no!!! Sure enough he is trying to pick off the polyps, which are cloing up faster than he can get them thank you. So, with the net and the glass cleaner wand I gently but firmly shove the little b#%#!rd into the net and transport him back to the LFS.
So now the only crabs in my tank are hermits. I am seeing more empty snail shells laying around lately. Mostly Cerith shells. I am now on a quest to find out if it was the original brown crab or maybe the emerald that was enjoying escargo. If I find out it is the hermits they will go the way of the others. They are muce easier to catch though.
To be continued................

Have you put extra shells for the hermits in your tank? They will kill if they don't have extra shells to choose from.

Yes they have extra shells, they are I think it might be them, killing the cerith snails. Only time will tell, they are just crabs of interest right now. No arrest warrants have been issued.

Dead Ceriths huh?

I'm going to go ahead and assume you have Blue Leg Hermits in there?

If I am correct than I would recommend either keep the ceriths or the blue legs..... Blue Legs love cerith shells for some odd reason.

Out of 10 Ceriths I have 2-3 left. And low and behold all my blue legs have cerith shells on, excep the two biggest ones are using Turbo Shells.

If you ditch the blue legs I would recommend Scarlet Hermits. They are extremely docile and I have never caught a single one going after any snail in my tank.

Ah Just as I thought. Yes they are the ever popular blue legs. and I have seen some running around with new cerith shells. Thanx for you input. I can see my CUC morphing into Asteas, ceriths, and nassirius snails. I believe I have one true scarlet in there but he seems like a lazy bugger that must be sleeping somewhere most of the time.

Scarlets are great in my tank. If you ever have a desire to keep a crab get a porcelain crab.

The filter feed 90% of the time (really cool looking). He will crab a piece of food when I feed the tank krill pieces of algae wafers, but all the other times he is filter feeding with his 2 catcher's mitts extended.

Scarlets and Porcelain Crabs are the only 2 crabs that will ever be in my tank.
