Cracked Sump

I have a small crack in the bottom corner of my acrylic sump. Looks like it was dropped once. It doesn't appear to be leaking, but I don't want to take any chances. What can I seal it with?

Only way to properly seal it is to clean the surface very well, get a piece of acrylic and some weld on type of acrylic glue/solvent and weld a piece of acrylic over the crack.

A 3mm thick piece of acrylic glued over the crack will stop the crack lengthening.

I have found that non pressure pvc pipe glue works as well on acrylic as any of the specialists acrylic glues. And it comes in a clear (no color) option

If using PVC cement, it must contain methyl ethyle ketone (MEK) only. Many PVC glues contain other stuff in them which will prevent them from properly welding the acrylic piece together and it's the weld we want and not the glue. I've dripped some PVC glue on acrylic before and was able to peel it off the acrylic so if it were me, I would use stuff made for acrylic and not chance a leak in a critical area such as a sump or crack repair because once you screw that up, the sump will be toast. There will be no going back and fixing it if the two pieces don't bond properly.

I agree do it correctly the first time. You can usually by scraps of acrylic at acrylic supply houses and sign shops, Get WeldOn to bond it there as well. Home Depot and Lowe's have acrylic but not the bonding agent.

The PVC cement I used to experiment with was Protec N type for non pressure pipes.

contains -
60 to 100% methyl ethyle ketone
<10%Cyclohexanone
<10%Tetrahydrofuran

It bonded as well as the specialists acrylic glues, is cheaper, AND, you probably already have some in the workshop from your tank plumbing. :celeb1:

Agree that "welding" on an acrylic piece larger than the cracked area should work. I had a sump with pieces glued on over old bulkhead holes and never had an issue.
