Craigslist deals

I hope this isn't against the forum rules but it's hard for a noob to tell what is a good deal. Maybe place link and brief description (since posts expire) to share possible deals or see if it's a waste of money?

I found an ad (davis) for 100lbs of used live sand for $20. I don't have the means to store it and keep it live until I start up my system but maybe someone else can use it

Pretty typical to see lots of used sand for cheap. Do not use sand from another system without rinsing all but a cup of it.

I've gotten that advice before and it makes sense.

I can't store it though.

He also had 200lbs of live rock for $100.

The rock is a good deal of its not contaminated, like with copper. Also if you go to buy it see how it is stored. If its still in a tank probably ok, but if in stagnate nasty water probably wanna cook it.

It's a cool idea but RC will close it down very quick and their filters will erase half of the link.

Borchers is partially right...there isn't any automatic filters for CL links so I'm not sure what that is about, but unfortunately we don't allow links to off-site sales.

You can thank that to a plethora of individuals whom in the past have tried slick tactics to try and circumvent our selling/trading rules.

"Hey! Look at this awesome skimmer I just found I craigslist! Is it a good deal? Link" And it turns out its their own skimmer which they were just told a few days ago they would need to wait to sell on here. :) People will try the same thing for buddies or banned members they know can't sell on here for whatever reasons.

It's common with large forums.

Maybe just include search terms that will narrow it down to the listing? I suppose this would get me in trouble for circumventing the filter though.

Need some advice, I found a listing I can trade some climbing gear, that's collecting dust, for.

" Got about 60+ pounds of really nice Tonga mix live rock that has been dried out and now is in saltwater with power heads, so it is dead but just now bringing it back..looking for $3/pound..take it all for $150..."

And 60 pounds of dry sand for climbing gear I'm selling for $180. I am thinking about asking for the containers and powerheads to make it a deal. Thoughts?

I don't have a filter to keep the rock wet so it will probably die again. Might as well push for dry rock prices?

He will probably want to keep it at "live rock prices" but you may be able to talk him down. It doesn't sound like it is really live rock yet, just been sitting in salt water for a while.
Could you maybe just put it all in buckets/containers with a power head for water movement?

You don't really need to start with all live rock. You could get dry rock (which I prefer). Just get a few live rocks to seed the dead rock. The pros are lower price and no pests. Cons are your filtration takes longer to establish as well as coraline. Some say dry rock leaches phostphate, but I feel like sketchy live rock could do the same. You can also clean off the dry rock with a diluted mix of muriatc acid and water to open the rock pores up better.

The 100lbs of sand for $20 is still available in davis. I only need about 60lbs of it, anyone want the rest if I go Pick it up tomorrow?

If you cant find anyone else closer I can take care of what ever you don't want. Im near Elk Grove though.

Anyone else see the aquarium coffee table on craigslist? I'd love that but I have no idea what I would put in it and I know my daughter would slip something in there and kill everything. She tried to put a half eaten grape in my sump while I was tinkering with my skimmer.

Someones giving away a 120g and stand in Woodland, if you look in the free section was posted at 9:40am today(7/1/13)

why cant you just use the sand from the local beaches? i am sure there are plenty of benificial bacterias in it. all you need to do is seed it with some critters from an established tank and you should be good right?
