Was just looking at the tank and notice a fairly decent sized black claw sticking out of the rock. Looked closer and it appears I have hitchiker. Did a little research and I guess it is a xanthid crab and not good? How do I get it out? Should I try the food in a cup trick. If that doesn't work...what next? I read these things can slowly destroy my reef tank. Any help or tips besides pull everything out.

That worked for me 3 for 3.
Use bait food that sinks to the bottom and make sure its a tall glass. If you have a general idea where it is put the glass there right at dark and you will nab it quick.

I tried to get my sallys out thaqt way and only got one with about 30 tries. Hopefully, it works better with this guy. How bad are these little guys?

The crab is bad enough that you definitely don't want it in there.

Small medical pliers that can grab unruly crabs and squeeze them to death or break off their appendages.

I will have to get some of those. I'll try the trap trick tonight.

i would say a glass on an angle with food in it to trap the crab

I second the "stab them" approach. When I got my live rock I probably had 30 gorilla crabs as hitchhikers. I kept a long kabob skewer by the tank and slowly speared them as I saw them.

The only thing I ever caught in traps were snails, hermits, and my serpent stars.

Trap didn't work...I am going to have to spear him. Never saw him again after that one time.

If you can find where it is you might try to tie some kind of food to a string and just pull it out if it goes for the food.

I've caught crabs that way in Florida using pigs ears.

Spearing crabs is good as long as they are not too big and the clean up crew can handle it.

I took a kabob skewer and tied a small piece of fish to it with 2 lb fishing line, not to far off the tip of it and when he came out to grab it i would stab him...
