Craziest Zoanthid Pics EVER!

XSharkboyX

Wishin' I Was Fishin'
If i had any i would post it in the sticky above^ or in the photography forum. The zoanthid forum is for discussion, not eye candy threads. (learned that one from a great fellow reefer...)

Lets get some fresh topics going on in here any suggestions from fellow reefers?

How about how the zoanthid forum is cluttered with picture threads, instead of discusion... j/k
No seriously, lets start some new discussion. Lets hear some topics. ie
Growing techniques
Feeding
Resisting the urge to frag a frag.:spin2:
Recent articles, or good information to share... :reading:

Those are all golden discussions.

How about growing? I have a personal interest in this.

p.s. you forgot photoshopping skillz to increase your earning potential.

I really like viewing pictures of peoples znp's. Does this make me a bad reefer? I feel duped by your thread.

in all honesty what is there to discuss what hasnt been discussed ? growing technics ? melt off's for no apparent reason ? flow ? lighting ? feeding ? there's alot and part of it depends on each tank. people like to show their new zoa's, no different then if you got a porsche you would wash it and drive it around.

This is fine and all good. However, there are designated area's to "show them off." ie The sticky thread above ^ posted by MUCHO REEF.
There are lots of things to discuss, besides asking how many polyps are on your new frag.

Wow, I'm shocked to hear you say there's nothing else to discuss. I keep 20 topics of discussion on my desktop at all times. There is always, I mean always zoa and paly related topics to talk about, but no one cares to do that anymore. As you can see, topics will often just sit there with no replies.

When I joined this site in 2003 and later became a Team RC member, this forum was full and fights and daily flaming. I ask if I could tackle this forum and help turn it around. Guess what, we did, this forum was the bomb, and I mean that in a good way. We made some changes, got rid of the flaming, and we were literally filling up this entire page with new post every single day. Then things changed, all everyone wanted to talk about was ID's, Names, Lineage, what's this worth and picture post to lure others to reply and make a sale. I begged, we begged, we did everything we could, but this forum became the place to do everything but discuss. But as soon as someone has a problem, they come running for answers, when we should all be proactive and ask those questions before there's an issue.

So what happened? 20 of the most knowledgeable zoanthid and palythoas keepers became tired and frustrated one by one including myself, and I, ( they ) all left. 20 very active and intelligent reefers who could answer any question within seconds, .......all gone. Every zoa forum on the net is dead for the same reasons. We've gotten away from what got us here. We use to have discussions that went on for days, weeks even. Pages, I mean pages of good stuff to read and refer back to.

I felt the tribe had spoken. So we went from filling up this page with replies and new post every single day for years, until early2010/late 2009, to what it is now. See the threads below, read each page, then read what my friend 650 said.

Nope, I'm not bad, I'm not even complaining, and I will no longer beg adults to get involved with sharing more than just ID request, names, pictures and hype. This was the best zoanthid forum on the net, now it is what it is. So if everyone just wants to post pictures in the discussion thread and not the sticky at the top of the page, then that's fine, really, it is. But this is what the people wanted, and the people have spoken. It is what it is.

Please read each of these threads

mucho u know how i feel about the hobby ect, and over the years ive gotten to feel a different way over all on the hobby what it brings. my response was really to be negitive, but on my local site i see the same as on all the other site's, people refuse to use google or do any research. ive read a bunch of the stuff you have written on here as well as other member's. after having had around 200 morphs of zoa's, doing research, trying different feeding technique's different lighting, different flow. and can say hey this works if done this exact way, then get a nasty gram because it didnt work for them and or caused a problem. i have backed off alot of stuff as far as discussions go or info.

i will put this out there though as i do run t5's , had some regular ole green zoa's that the colony was split inbtween 2 color spectrum bulbs, a ati blus and a blue special, over a period of time the side with the blue plus became a much more neon green where the other half was still nice but no where near the color, so i switched it around and 6 months later the one side held the neon and other didnt turn, not sure why even after the period of time.

now for the money question after 6yr's of keeping zoa's why do most of us get the twice a year melt off on some zoa's, ive always blamed it on the moon phase of the seasons, my tank parms dont really ever change and temp is controlled via chiller.

oh and btw i think i have maybe posted 5 pic's total on RClol i keep a tank thread on MR

On the topic of growth . . . Anyone notice a specific time table (season) of better growth? It seemed to me I got the most growth through the fall months. Spring and summer I would say normal growth but a few seemed to REALLY shoot babies between august and november. Someone said something about moon phases, could this directly effect our home reefs? Do we really know the exact situation in nature that helps coral to grow? New moon, low barometric pressure, etc.?

I think you meant to say, you weren't trying to be negative, and I know you weren't my friend.

It's true, sometimes the answer is just a search away. Often you will find a better answers via a search from a diverse group of people. Asking here as well is ok too.

If someone sent you a nasty PM because what you suggested didn't work for them, I think that is sad. No two systems are the same, I have preached this for years. One can't neglect other areas of their tank, then apply one suggestion and expect the same results. All those topics not being discussed, are the ones which should be discussed to better prepare for the problematic days ahead which we all will face at some time or another.

In 20 years, I have never experienced this die off ( melting ) away that you speak of. If we go back and revisit most all the post in this forum over the years, one can clearly see through a series of Q & A, most all situations have been explained and reasons given why what happened really happened. :)

BTW, for what it's worth, I have been atacked and argued with over a suggestion or answer to a problem and how to solve it. I have loss track of the times I've heard no, you're wrong. Only to find out later, that I was indeed correct with my answers. Many reefers don't want to believe that what they are doing is wrong and actually causing the issues they are having. There was a larger store out west who was having some issues with their zoas dying off one by one in their 300 gallon display tank. Through a series of Q & A which took the better part of a day, I told him what the problem was. He flat out blew up at me. Told me I didn't know what I was talking about. So he continued doing what he was doing. He was adding every emerald crab that came into his store, directly into this 300 gallon display tank. I told him, they were the culprits in the series of missing polyps which he proclaimed was die off. Well, about a month later, he opened his store up very early on a Sunday morning to do his annual store cleaning. To his surprise, dozens of emerald crabs were on the face of the reef and half of his zoanthid population was completely gone. I had warned him and warned him but he argued. As juvis, they are herbivores, once they reach the diameter of a quarter, they become omnivores, and he found out the hard way.

All you can do is share what you know as factually as possible.

From a purely hobbyist perspective without my mod hat on...

Trends and hot topics are up and down for certain corals. Zoa's are currently down vs other types. It is what it is. Being surprised that the posts here are lower than they use to be shouldn't be a surprise.

People like pictures, nothing necessarily wrong with that. Most people didn't get into the hobby because they wanted to discuss intricate details of the hobby, it's because they've always been impressed by reefs or saw pretty colors on some sort of coral thing ;)

Turning every post and every thread into political and status of the hobby/forum rants however has turned many off of posting in this forum. I gave up trying to keep track of that a long time ago, well before I was a mod here. Couple that with comments every time a new (old) question is posted with links to old posts where it has already been discussed, and you end up with a forum full of old posts and not a lot of new topics being discussed because... well... there isn't really a ton of new info to talk about, just new people and new types/colors of zoa's. The difference in this forum vs LPS/SPS/softies is the the way people approach for help and the way they're received.

You guys have some great suggestions for some good topics. I think you should create new threads with them. There are some older threads which can also be used to support your opinions and theories which makes a good discussion. It's the only way to truly keep this forum alive.

With everyone involved things can turn around I think. There are a ton of new topics yet to be discussed which aren't intricate such as the topics listed above. Everyone should feel free to ask any question without fear of reprisal.:wavehand:

Care to share why you feel you had great growth in those months? Sounds interesting. Here's a link you might want to check out, good stuff.

bingo

It has gotten to the point that even though I dont come to opr post in this forum all that often, I have recently more than once seen people post a picture of their new polyps wanting to share, without even mentioning a price, and within a couple of posts you have people griping and whining about what they probably paid for them and how they probably got ripped off.

That isnt encouragement or educational, its redundant whining that doesnt exactly improve this forum, or the OP's thread for the better.

Its even worse than the endless hornet threads that used to be every other post. At least in those you are usually warned by the title and can just not click, instead of being blindsided by it in a thread that simply didnt need to go there

I'm kind of a nerd and I document new growth and the conditions (to compare month to month) with my tank. It seemed like between september and november stuff that had been popping a babie a month gave me 2. I'm just going on my data. I was just curious if anyone else sees better growth in a specific season.

How's that tank makeover coming?

Pretty good. I still update every 2 weeks now. I figure it is as much for me than anyone so I can remember the events over the lifespan of the tank. Plus if I can help a few people along the way maybe the zoa gods will smile upon this tank and keep it going. When it was an office tank it was easy to take pictures, download, upload and post. Now the tank is at home and I have taken maybe a dozen since Thanksgiving.

I hope you are doing well too.
