Craziest Zoanthid Pics EVER!

Well, at least no one titled a post "The Cure to Melting Zoa's", for the sole purpose of tricking you into reading their internet rant.

May be on one of the many zoa threads, but I would be interested in how many hours you run your lights? I run two 400 watt MH's and used to run them 11 hrs, have cut back to six and don't see much change in growth. Your thoughts.

RokleM speaks the truth. I loved visiting this site but did not become an active poster till things started to go south. It just became too much complaining after a while. There is already enough drama in real life and I do not look forward to seeing it on a forum with people that have a common interest (reefing). So I starting going to other sections.

IMO I do not see pictures as a bad thing. I mean pictures speak a thousand words and if I post a picture of a polyp that grew in almost 3 months time from one polyp to thirty is that such a bad thing? Heck I will do that tomorrow when I am not at work.

I also still believe there are many knowledgeable znp reefers still on here. I still see some around.

It has gotten to the point that even though I dont come to opr post in this forum all that often, I have recently more than once seen people post a picture of their new polyps wanting to share, without even mentioning a price, and within a couple of posts you have people griping and whining about what they probably paid for them and how they probably got ripped off.

On the other hand, well over half of the "check out the pics of my new zoanthids" threads are commercial, plain and simple. I posted a thread in the id section for some palys I'd found, and got flooded by "I'll buy a frag" pm's. I don't mean one or two, I mean over a dozen, and I even posted "NO PM'S". I had people wanting to pay in advance to get put onto a waiting list, and that was from a thread in the id forums that no one really goes onto. Would've been 10x as many if I'd done it in the main zoanthids forum.

If you post a great pic of a "new" zoanthid on here and talk about how great it is, you can sell frags and lots of them. If you think the same people posting the same "check out my awesome zoanthid" threads are doing it for the sake of it you're on crack, those guys are making bank behind the scenes. There's two types of threads in this forum, one is "look at my eagle eyes", the other is "paradise zoas the best zoanthids ever (that I happen to have frags of)".

Would be nice to have a specific thread or subforum where people can post their pic threads without subjecting the rest of us to their blatant commercialism, kind of like on the LPS forums where there's a favia thread, an acans thread, a chalice thread, etc... A zoa thread and a palys thread would go a long way to make the rest of us feel like we're not walking through spamcentral.

I was forced out of the hobby about 2 years ago to go to college. I'm gearing up to set up my new tank and came back to this forum as was pretty shocked at the lack of content. I used to love reading all of the informative posts and trying to absorb as much as possible since I was very new to reefing.

I'm kind of a nerd and I document new growth and the conditions (to compare month to month) with my tank. It seemed like between september and november stuff that had been popping a babie a month gave me 2. I'm just going on my data. I was just curious if anyone else sees better growth in a specific season.

I don't think you're a nerd at all.

That's a great idea to document your growth rates monthly.

I'm curious also to see if anyone has observed seasonal growth.

Anyone?

Mucho

Mucho

That is something another nerd would say haha jk Mucho.

I am actually gathering data on seasonal growth but to reduce error in my experiment it is going to be a while since I need many more seasons to give a scientific analytical answer. Also many factors need to be looked into as in what time of year do I change bulbs? do I feed my palys certain times of the year (i.e. maybe I don't feed during summer because I love to be out more), etc etc.

OK, I'll gladly be a nerd, LOL

Will be waiting to see what you have to share.

What are you feeding BTW?

I am feeding nothing but live blackworms and thawed mysis twice a week. I was thinking of just one item at first but then thought two items would be better for variety and each polyp will be given equal amounts. I will also have a control group which will be fed nothing.

Right now I have "pink and gold" paly frags growing in a a lower flow/high light and another one growing in high flow/lower light setting along with controls. I am also going to use spacemonsters for this since I am having a surplus of these. I have some green zoanthids that are also in the same locations but are in the same amount of light (since i dont have room for them in high light :( ). But for these I will still see if flow (high/low) will influence growth but will something different since I can not include it in the SP/PNG data. I will actually do an actual scientific study with background/methods/results/review section and ofcourse will be peered reviewed by all of you fellow aquarist.

It is nothing to be published so ofcourse and will not be reviewed by experts but it will still be a fun read and discussion.

I'm relatively new to RC and here are my thoughts, if anyone is interested...

*I deleted most of the post because frankly, it isn't worth saying-- I'm attempting to spread GOOD karma today.*:spin2:

I guess in general I wish people were nicer-- not because they should be but because they want to and because the sense of community is such a strong force in forum learning and sharing.

On the topic of zoas-- I cannot imagine zoas not being wildly popular! I love them! Ok I only have one small frag but they're so interesting.

I personally find the zoa forum the best one on RC.

Great! I am already anxious to read the results.
