Crazy Clown Pairs!

We have a two pairs of clown fish in a 54 gallon tank. One pair is laying eggs now and the other pair is very curious. They keep going over and checking out the eggs, almost wanting to help. The 4 get along great! They all hang out together, but if we try to add any other fish, they gang up on them. It is like tag team bullying. We were told that normally two pairs cannot be in the same tank and obviously we have an exception to that rule. We of course were also told clowns usually be ok with most other fish so they are ok to put in first, well again we have the exception! :fish1:
I am new to posting pictures so be patient with me...I get them up!

i have a pair of picasso's and they are too funny to watch. just wish theyd find the bubble tip anemone i put in there 2 weeks ago! lol

Sounds more like you have one pair and 2 sub-males. Clown females are very territorial to other clown females. In a tank of that size the larger female would likely bully, badger, and kill the smaller female.
But.. there can be many males is the tank. One will be the queens main squeeze. The others are all beneath him and generally are sent to 'guard' the territory.

This would be my theory as well - still cool though...
