So we were out doing some christmas shopping today. The girls went one way, and my brother in law and I went to Scheels (sports outfitter/hunting/fishing). The girls of course went shopping crazy and were running around for 4-5 hours so we went across the street to a Petco. Not all Petco's have a saltwater section, but this one did. It didn't have much, actually a few of the tanks were completely empty. A few maroon clowns, ocellaris clowns, niger triggers, dogface puffer, no damsels (besides the clowns), no cardinalfish, no gobies... Pretty much what you'd expect from a Petco saltwater section. But one of the tanks on the bottom row had some live rock. Low and behold one of the pieces of live rock was covered in zoanthid polyps. And when I say covered, I mean polyp city. This thing had to have 4-5 Hundred polyps... 4-5 different types of zoas as well. I couldn't believe my eyes. The polyps looked like crap under the incandescent?! lighting which is why I'm sure it still sat there. I knew it was a gold mine though.
Of course, I came home with it.... unfortunately as a gift for my brother. It's in his tank now and the polyps look great. The majority are Orange with purple centers (very similar to my orange colony) and Green (Radioactive Dragon eyes). But some are Green with orange centers (Miami hurricanes) and a handful are Green with yellow speckles - a very unique pattern that I've never seen myself. All in all I bet this chunk of live rock and zoas would cost over 100 bucks on Liveaquaria or DiversDen... 21.07$
Miracles do happen.
Merry christmas!!!!!
