I've read lots on rocks leaching phosphate back to the water,i don't know what to believe anymore.I started my tank 7 months ago with dry rock and a couple live rock pieces.Phosphate is undetectable almost from the beginning and i run a good amount of GFO.I cannot explain the crazy hair algae growth that started a month ago.I know rocks leaching phosphate is a topic that was discussed many times before and its the only thing i can blame.maybe im wrong i don't know.can someone give me a link on an article on rocks leaching phasphate that might help?thanks a lot

I'm in same boat I think my rock is leeching po4 also but how can u tell will it ever stop how can I fix it?

I had the same problem when I first started my tank. I inherited LR from a friend who used tap water for 3 years. My Phosphates were off the roof. I talked to some folks and finally the solution was,

Buy Kents Phosphate removal, put 1/3 to half in a media bag, put in a decent flow area of tank or sump, than about every week change it out and follow the directions on it. Reheat the media and repeat.

It will take some time but after a month to 2 months depending on how much phospates you have, it will drop. Remember use RO/Di water only. N O TAP Water.. Hope this helps!

GFO is only good when your phosphates are almost undetectable. Kents PR is better than GFO in removing large amounts of phosphates at a time. But after you are success, I would than recommend running GFO for a healthy tank.

Hair algae will start to brown out ur corals because they eat all the nutrients . My friend had hair algae taking over his tank .he tried everything to remove it , nuthin worked . He ended up replacing all the rocks

LR is your best bio filter. It works best with solid steady water flow. The flow forces the water through the rock as well as reducing debris on the bottom and maintaining a positive gas exchange at the surface.

Also overfeeding , to many water changes , and poor water source all play a factor.
Also amount of stock and tank size.

Do u have a lid on the tank?
Whats used for water flow?

i can remove a decent amount of algae every couple of days.if you are exporting phosphate this way along with the use of GFO and RO/DI water you are going to eliminate phosphate from the tank, right??

Pruning with new toothbrush, target feeding only - no broadcast, turkey baste LR often, bi-weekly water changes, mesh sock along with more chaeto in sump with abbreviated reverse light schedule, more protein skimmer cleaning, Microbacter 7 by Brightwell Aquatics in combination with AZNO3 is how I contain any outbreaks -- which do not occur often after 7+ years.

I had the same issue a few weeks back. Not with rocks leeching but with a huge outbreak of GHA. It was due to phosphates because of over feeding. Now, the algae prob is gone. I resolved it buy reducing my photo period, reduced my feeding, started putting a media bag of phosban in my media rack along with my carbon, and I bought two turbo snails. GHA is gone. Yay.

Let me pass on a little secret I learned about a year ago.... Algae Scrubber.....Kiss your hair algae goodbye. In a matter of a few weeks, feed all you want, watch algae just disapear. Try it!!! Youll never look back

Can anyone tell me how having a lid on the tank or not effects hair algea?
