Creating a pico-reef

directional

Hey I am creating a pico reef with a 2.5 gal mini bow...

I am going to be using a 20w coralife light for the tank. so I will have approx 8-10 watts per gallon.

I am going to be needing frags to start my tank off. I have never had a reef before so I was thinking about doing a Zoo or something easy to take care of.

Is there any good stores that arn't so over priced or is someone willing to sell frags?

I am located in Farmingville.

I am assuming everything will be ready in a week or two...

you have aqua hut in coram, and you have fish and reef in ronkonkoma. both have corals for sale. if you need anything as far as equipment contact cindy @ www.jcaquatics.com. she is in farmingville and has the best prices.

I usually goto Aqua Hut all the time but I didn't know that they sell frags.. They have good prices on them?

Not like magic isle that is $55 for a rotting zoo / mushroom

Welcome aboard :)

I've nver seen Aquahut have frags, but Suffolk Fish and Reef has a tank of them. Pets Warehouse has nice things too, but also larger size. Your best bet really for frags is to hook up with a club and get frags that way--certainly the most cost effective. Don't bother going in MI--too depressing.

Zoos are good for a tank your size, or Xenia. Finger leathers and other soft corals are probably the easiest to care for. You could also try a feather duster in there, mushrooms. Shrimp are good (it would be neat to try a sexy shrimp as they only get to be about 1/2 in. fully grown). Certainly some snails--Astraea or Nassarius.

Are you putting in sand? What fish are you looking at? And you're going to cycle the tank first, right? :) See if you can kick start your pico with rock from your FO tank.

What Christine said is right on!
expecially about the part with club frags! xenia , kenya trees, chaeto usually come gratis and occasionally some zoos. I've seen Acroporas ond others pruchased at the club auction for as little as $3.
As far as LFS go I like "Something fishy" in bayshore, because Les will sometimes frag a piece of that $60 coral for you.;)

If you want, I can give you some Kenya tree, mushrooms and star polyps to start .
I'm just up the road from you.

That sounds good to me!...Where can we meet? I will send you a PM. I put water in my tank about 2 days ago and I did use the live rock from my FO tank.

I have about 5-6 lbs in there I would say .. :) and approx 3lbs of sand...

Sorry I didn't respond to you guys quick was because the e-mail notify must have gotten messed up. I was wondering why none of you guys responded. Thank you for all of your help that is exactly what I did.. I will check out some local fish stores tomorrow :):)
