Criteria for choosing skimmers?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any info or websites I could read about choosing a skimmer. It's one thing to come on a forum and say "What one should I get?" but what I want to know is how people choose?

There seem to be a ton of different brands and types...How do you know which is quality made and which is a good fit for your system?

Thanks!!!

I personally use word of mouth from the forums, after that size that I have available in my sump will determine my choice.

I personally like to use a skimmer rated for a larger volume for my system. I'm currently planning a skimmer rated at 100g for my 40g breeder. I figured if I get to a point where my water is too clear I can always use the skimmer intermittently.

Also a key indication is pump type(brand) and how much air suction they have usually measured in L/H.

Cone type and diameter are also factors.

Are airstone skimmers (water pump driven, air via wood stone) still considered to be useable in saltwater tank application? What are their limitations?

IME, for larger systems airstone skimmers are limited, but I've seen a couple DIY skimmers with airstones for nano and pico tanks made with plastic water bottles.
