hey gang, my crocea seems to like to lay on its side, seems to be happy there.my problem is i read somewhere on rc not to let your clams lay on there side.is this true,i seem to see alot of pics with them laying over even more than mine.

I have two croceas taht like to lay down on their sides as long as they get enough light is fine, i dont know why they do it.

I have 4 croceas that all turn themselves on their side. mouths down-wind of water flow. I "figure" waterflow and/or lighting. continually guessing! but loving it.

mine is laying down, facing my glass, I just hope it likes it. The mouth is downstream. Should he have his foot in the sand, or a rock though?

Croceas are rock boring clams, they can be placed directly on the sand but do not like it and will often lay on their side as a result.

Ideally, they should be placed on your rock work in a secure location or you can place a small flat rock under them while on the sand so they have something to attach to.

another point you're all missing is that the clams are turned AWAY from the water flow. Tridacnid clams do not tolerate water flow very well, croceas being the most tolerant. if the clam's mantle is ruffling, it's pretty safe to say that it's getting too much current.

I agree. T.Crocea and T.Maxima's like to be placed on rock. They will attach to the rock with little thin ligaments, and once attatched, they are hard to remove. If you do not cut the ligaments correctly, and end up pulling the clam off the rock, you will damage the clam and possibly kill it. I suggest placing the clam on a small piece of LR, let it attatch to that. Once it attatches to the little piece of LR, then you can move the small piece of LR to wherever you like, and both you and the clam will be happy.....depending on water flow and light too of course.

Your crocea's and maxima's may like the rocks, but every single time I've tried to place mine in rockwork, they've jumped down onto the sand and stayed there, happy as a ................clam :)

Clams seem to do their own thing. I've attempted to turn them for a better view, and 20 minutes later, they've wiggled themselves back into the EXACT same position they started out in. I just give up and let them choose.

I have a similar question about my maximas. I have some babies and they are in a low flow area. They are presently on the sand because they kept jumpin off the rock. Recently, two of the clams decided they preferred to be upside down. I would flip them over and they have stayed that way so far. Any guesses as to why they would flip themselves completely over? Or is it just perhaps that a hermit crab is doing the flipping?
