crocea not attatching

clam has been in the tank since march, he is on a shell on the sand bed he is 5inch under metal halides, reacts well to light change just cant figure out why still not attatched? any idea
 
That's a new one ime- could it perhaps have been mis-identified as a crocea when it's actually a derasa or a squamosa? Could its byssal gland have been damaged at some point before purchase and it recovered well enough that it can exist without it?
 
i know that it is a crocea when i bought it they told me it was a maxima but doing more looking at pics and reading it's a crocea . i dont know if it was harmed but if it was dont they die?
 
Yeah, loss of a byssal organ usually does them in, ime- could it be the shell is so smooth that the threads can't attach? Maybe something with a rougher, rock like texture? That would be a stretch, too, since I've seen them attach to glass, but it's my best guess- good luck-
